Azim looks up to Salman, SRK and Aamir Khan
To make his character in "Qasam Se Qasam Se" appear realistic, Azim frequented call centre offices to absorb the finer nuances of the people working there. "It was quite a relevation for me as an actor.
I witnessed not only people's mannerisms but also the activities they indulge in during the break hour. Looking into the mirror, some guys would be busy ruffling their hair and taking care of their looks, while some would busy binging.
And there would others catching up with family and friends over their cell phones. This has helped shaped my character in the film.
" Azim feels that all our veteran actors were keen observers and would translate that on screen. "Whether it were the legendary actors like Dilip Kumar or the late Raj Kapoor or Dev Anand , they were schools in themselves.
I am a great fan of Salman Khan , Shah Rukh Khan and Aamir Khan and look at them as a student who looks upon his guru. I am mastering the art of acting watching their films," he smiles

(less)I never thought I'd be a desirable woman: Sameera Reddy
"My name in the list means a lot to me. As as a young girl, I never thought even in my wildest dreams that I would become a desirable woman.
I yearned for a perfect body as I was ugly duckling in school. But now that I have entered films, I believe that beauty is hidden in the imperfections of people and it all depends on how you use them.
That's my definition of desirable and I am glad to have made it to the list," says Sameera. The actor is basking in the success of her last Tamil release opposite Madhavan and has Padma Shri Priyadarshan's Tezz to look forward to.
Sameera has now decided that she will do a mix of performance-oriented and glamorous characters on screen, something that Simran and Jyothika did in Kollywood. So is the report true that Sameera wants to become the next Simran and Jyothika? "You cannot become another person.
I had said that I look up to both Simran and Jyothika, who had a mixed bag of roles- performance-oriented and cute characters. Both had their own fan following .
They are my role models and I want to have a beautiful lineup of characters like them," says the actor
(less)Sherlyn Chopra likes being unconventional
Be it politics, cinema, sports, business or any other arena, women across the globe including India are in great form mentally, physically and consciously to undertake greater responsibilities and tougher challenges that are often encountered on paths less travelled." Sherlyn is also happy that she has gone from being just a pin-up girl to an entrepreneur.
Says she, "The rapid metamorphosis in my case would not have been possible had the mindsets of the majority of the people in the Hindi film industry continued to be goverened by prejudices. I look upto entrepreneurs who command respect and attention for daring to think out of the box and act accordingly.
They do not have a herd mentality. What they have is unadulterated creativity which is set on fire by courage.
" Naming films like " The Dirty Picture ", " Erin Brokovich ", " No One Killed Jessica "," The Black Swan " as cinema that has changed the way we think, Sherlyn says, "Unconventionality is no longer a taboo. It is being applauded and celebrated by both the classes and the masses.
The pulse of the youth is racing towards liberalisation. And I'm truly loving it.
" Asked why she decided to give us photographs that resembled those of the " Jism 2 " campaign, the actor quips, "I have pushed the envelope by choosing to cover my nakedness with nothing but pure consciousness."

(less)Flash mob greets Imran at New York University
"I had a blast at NYU. Everyone was so enthusiastic, they put on a very polished, confident show, and the surprise flash mob at the end was perfectly executed.
My best wishes to all the students involved," Imran said in a statement. The students had been practising for the performance for over two weeks, ahead of Imran's visit to New York as part of the promotional tour.
"As the president of NYU Dillagi, a Bollywood dance team, I knew we had to have simpler steps that the general public would be able to do and we sent videos out to the public. I thought that the flash mob came out even better than expected since people kept joining the mob throughout the sequence and it definitely surprised those that did not know of it ahead of time," Mohit Chhatpar, coordinator of the flash mob, said.
"It was really fun to be doing a flash mob and having Imran among us was all the more fun. He was very sporting and interacted with the students.
We are excited about this movie as well and are glad he could come and be among us to talk about his movie," he added. The Dharma Productions' film, also starring Kareena Kapoor, is set to hit theatres Feb 10.

It also catapulted the careers of lead actors Rahul Roy and Anu Agarwal, who forayed into Bollywood with this film. Suri is also set to hunt for new faces for the sequel.

It can be said as the musical series of Aashiqui ..

(less)SRK goes larger than life with RA.One
150 crore ($30 million) project that boasts of world class VFX, mindblowing graphics and his own presence. Billed as a technological masterpiece, it will be unleashed on about 3,500 screens across the globe on Diwali Wednesday.
Shah Rukh's movie is also set to enter non-traditional markets like South Korea and Hong Kong. On 500 screens, it will be in the 3D format.
The high point of the movie is technology. RA.
One reportedly has 3,500 VFX shots and SRK collaborated with Jeffrey Kleiser, co-founder of US-based Synthesian Studios, to supervise the work done by the Indian film star's RedchilliesVFX team. Budget, technology and marketing, everything about the film is larger than life.
Many feel that sometimes filmmakers use inflated budget to promote films, but sci-films usually cost a lot. For instance, James Cameron's Avatar was made at a budget of Rs.
1,100 crore ($230 million), while RA.One , touted as the most expensive Bollywood film till date, had to pack everything into a meagre budget of about Rs.
150 crore. A co-production of Shah Rukh and Eros Entertainment, the film will enjoy equally extravagant premieres in Dubai, London and Toronto.
Since the conceptualisation stage, the film has been in the news and the buzz heightened once the Bollywood Badshah unleashed the mega marketing campaign by unveiling the first look with a newspaper front page ad Jan 1. The next giant step was to air its first trailer during the World Cup and later came tie-ups with Champions League T20, UTV Indiagames for online games and iPhone/iPad application for fans, Sony Playstation for video games, Google Plus and Seventymm, a leading DVD rental company for merchandising, as well as with Homeshop18 to sell superhero film merchandise and Youtube, which has a dedicated Ra.

One online store is selling merchandise related to the film. In past one month, the film's promotion saw an all time high with Shah Rukh's eight-city tour to create awareness about it, his back-to-back appearances on the finales of reality shows India's Got Talent , Just Dance and Sa Re Ga Ma Li'l Champs as well as occupying the hot seat on Kaun Banega Crorepati .
In short, it has been Shah Rukh all the way. Trade analyst Vinod Mirani describes the promotional activity as an "exercise to give the film a good opening and use the media to make it a hit".
"Usually promotion activity is all about giving a film a good opening and SRK is also doing this. That is the reason he has roped in Amitabh Bachhcan to do the voiceover and Rajinikanth for the cameo.
But he is promoting more of himself than his film. But I feel it will get a good opening since SRK is involved," he told IANS.
Anubhav Sinha has directed the film and Shah Rukh says his character is over the top in the film as he has donned a huge wig to play a nerdy programmer who wants to impress his son by creating a game. But things go out of hand when the game's villain escapes into the real world.
Reportedly Rs.1.
5 crore was the budget for the mould for the G.One action figure.
So far so good. Now all eyes are on the box office collection of the movie and trade pundits say it will have to gross Rs.
200 crore to break even. According to a news report, Shah Rukh Khan has sold the satellite rights for Rs.
37 crore, music rights for Rs.8 crore and ancillary rights for Rs.
10 crore. Singh says the distributors are expecting the film to break all records.
"People are expecting the film to break the first day opening records, first opening weekend records and first week earning records," said Singh. Film historian M.

(less)Game for more reality shows: Swami Agnivesh
In fact, now I feel like coming on more such reality shows. I don't know the available options, but I will be happy to be on such shows and channels which have such mass reach," Agnivesh told IANS over phone from Mumbai, after coming out of the show Friday.
The 72-year-old Arya Samaj leader entered the Colors show Tuesday. He entered as a guest--to stay with 11 young, celebrity contestants in a secluded house under 24x7 camera surveillance.
Agnivesh says it was a "rewarding experience". "People had scared me before I went for the show.
Many people raised questions about my entry into the show. I knew it was a risk to go for such a show, and I think even for the channel, it was quite a risk to invite someone like me.
..
for such a popular show..
. but in the end, I felt the combination was quite good," he said.
"The girls on the show are so outspoken that I was scared that they might say something unpleasant, and I was apprehensive about the cameras being on for 24 hours. But touchwood, there was no embarrassing moment for me.
It felt good and I think now I can go on such entertainment channels to spread social messages," added the saffron-clad Agnivesh. He wanted to talk about pertinent issues--casteism, alcoholism and corruption, during his stay in Bigg Boss 5 .
He is glad he could do so, but says only a limited amount of that conversation was perhaps aired on the channel. Nevertheless, he feels the small screen medium is extremely powerful.
"I think if people have a strong social message, television is an authentic and powerful medium for those who want to establish a better society. It is a good medium to reach the rural as well as well-educated people of the society and can help bring a positive change in the mindset of people.
"Just change in policies in courts and law can't bring a mass change..
.it is reaching the public through different mediums like the television that can do so!" said Agnivesh.
He could already feel winds of change in the controversial Bigg Boss 5 house with his entry on the show. From the centre of catfights and backbiting, the house turned tad peaceful as Agnivesh stepped in.
"I was happy that there was no such fight when I was inside the house. I think all the contestants themselves felt at peace with my presence and didn't feel like fighting.
All of them gave me a lot of love and respect," he added. Agnivesh's exit from the show will be aired Saturday.

Shahrukh Khan and Farhan Akhtar approached Nariman Films for the remaking rights of the original film "DON" through Mr. Javed Akhtar .
We had given them remaking rights only for Don - The chase Begins Again in 2005. We have never given remaking rights for "Don-2 The chase continues ".
Therefore we have raised our objection upon the Infringement on our Copyright of our film "Don" through our Advocates Mr. Digvijay Chopra and Miss Iva Bansal of Film India Corporate Legam Law Firm.
" Advocate Digvijay Chopra confirmed the news saying, "A legal Notice has been sent to Excel Entertainment , Red Chillies Entertainment, Reliance Entertainment , Shah Rukh Khan , Farhan Akhtar, Ritesh Sidhwani , Baba Arts for Infringement of Copyrights . The remaking rights were only given for the film 'Don- The chase begins again' starring Shah Rukh Khan.
It was granted by an agreement which expired in year 2009.Thereafter they never renewed the said agreement or took prospective rights from Nariman Films.
" Counsel Advocate Iva Bansal added, "Without any renewal of remaking rights Excel Entertainment and Red Chillies have made the film Don 2 ,the chase continues, Not only have they Infringed upon the title registered to Nariman Films i.e "Don" and "Don-2 - the Return of the King" which is in this matter second infringement .
The first infringement is the Film Don-2 itself made without taking necessary rights as per law." You see the Title Don -2 has already copyrighted in name of Nariman Films way back in January 2005.
Reliance Entertainment has taken the distribution without any NOC from Nariman Films who hold the negatives of the original film Don and is there copyright. We shall also extend our objection to Don 2's overseas distributors Paramount Films.
" Don 2 is slated to release in the last week of December 2011

Actress Amrita Rao along with other models was seen walking the ramp for Agni, while the song played in the background. T-Series that owns the music rights of the film have sent a legal notice to the brand, asking for a compensation of Rs 2 crore.
Bhushan Kumar, the head honcho of the music label confirms the news, "Yes, we have sent a legal notice to Agni for using our unreleased song without prior permission. It is an illegal thing to do.
We are moving court and suing them for about Rs 2 crore. One needs to get a license to use any song for a show.
However, for an unreleased song you cannot even obtain a license." A source from SRK's production house Red Chillies Entertainment says, "SRK was livid when he learnt that the unreleased number has been used by the brand.

In fact, some people didn't even think I could look Indian. But this song has changed that.
I have never looked more Indian or sexier! The song is a hit and I have had so much positive response from both Tamil and Telugu producers!" The song talks about Sophie being a Mumbai girl, with Lakhnavi eyes and beautiful skin. "My mum and I went to see the film in a theatre in Mumbai! The audience was clapping on the action sequences and they whistled when my song came on.
Prabhu sir makes everything look so easy but when you attempt to do it, you realise you are using muscles that you didn't even know existed!" Sohpie says before doing the song she had messaged Hrithik Roshan for advice as he had worked with Prabhu Deva. "Hrithik was so sweet and replied immediately telling me to 'enjoy every movement'.
That was the best advice because after that I just gave it my all. The song in Vedi is my first ever Tamil song! Next on my wish list is Rajni sir! Now that would really be a dream come true.

(less)RA.One nets highest ever Diwali day collections
5 crore with a net of Rs 18.5 crore on Wednesday (October 26th) making it the highest ever Diwali day collection in the history of Indian cinema.
The second day collections on Thursday, 27th October, were even more impressive with the film raking in a whopping Rs 36 crore gross with a net of Rs 25.10 crore net, making it the highest collection ever for a single day for an Indian film.
RA.One released on Diwali and while some critics gave it a thumbs up for blending elegance of Hollywood with Indian sensibilities, others panned the superhero drama by labelling it a 'video game'.
The reviews notwithstanding, the film managed to collect Rs 18 crore at the home box office on the opening day. Earlier, as predicted by trade pundits, the film couldn't break the first day collection records of Salman Khan-starrer Bodyguard , which earned Rs 22 crore in the domestic market on the opening day.
In the overseas market, the Red Chillies Entertainment and Eros International co-production raked in Rs 6.5 crore.
If reviewers have a different take on the film, viewers are also reacting differently but theatre owners predict good business in the coming week. "Although the film has got mixed reviews, the first day has been really good.
We witnessed more than 80 percent occupancy," a source in PVR said. "Moreover, the extensive marketing of the film has created a curiosity among people, who are eager to see what is the film all about," the source added.
Cinemax witnessed an average footfall on the first day. "There could be two reasons -- the 3D version of the film was made available a little late.
Although in metros it was fine, but in other cities due to delayed release in 3D we had to cancel some of the shows," said Sunil Punjab, CEO of Cinemax. "Also, we saw a decline in the occupancy in the evening as it was Diwali time and people were busy in Diwali puja.
But today (Thursday) the response has been encouraging since morning we have had good number of people coming to see the film," he added. Directed by Anubhav Sinha, the Rs 150-crore film, which also stars Kareena Kapoor and Arjun Rampal in prominent roles, was released in as many as 3,500 screens across the world.
Even before the film reached the theatres, its makers earned money by selling its satellite rights reportedly for Rs 35 crore and the distribution rights for Rs 77 crore. The film's highlight is high-tech VFX shots, which were outsourced from multiple specialty studios in London, Paris and Bangkok, as also the US.
Puneet Sahay of Spice Cinemas, however, informed that the film is not appealing to adults. "Although Shah Rukh's acting is good, RA.
One is basically a film for children as it boast of lot of animation and special effects. Adults are not actually liking the film.
However, it is likely to do well in the coming days," Sahay said. "Actually, it's nothing more than a video game," said college student Akhil Sharma.

(less)We have to be free of biases: Javed Akhtar
. 'Honesty starts from our conscience' - Salim Khan We have only got the freedom to breathe.
We can't talk, we can't demand. It is a very selective democracy.
It was after so many sacrifices, so many lives laid down and so many tragedies that India got its freedom. The individuals who sacrificed selflessly for India had a vision for post-independence India.
But what happened? Did we get freedom from poverty? Did we get freedom from hatred? Can all the people of India manage to get at least two square meals a day? Forget communal harmony between two religions, today there are caste wars and daughters are killed by their parents. No political party says what they will do for the country, instead they expose scams of the other party during elections for their own gain.
Will corruption stop when the Lokpal bill comes into existence? Will that police c o n s t ab l e, who stands at the other end of the 'No Entry' sign give up his chance of taking home 2,500 to 3,000 in bribes every day? We give bribes even to get our legal and legitimate work done. Even I have succumbed to that.
Honesty starts from our conscience. It is our mother who tells us 'don't pick it up, give it back'.
But mothers these days are seen only on the silver-screen not at home. Mothers are busy at work or found in clubs.
The family is the first school and a mother is the first teacher. But that doesn't happen today.
Freedom doesn't merely mean driving the British out and hoisting our flag. Law and order, governance, administration was much better in the British period.
I was 12-years - old when we got our freedom and I have exper i e n c e d those days. Today, people have the freedom to announce Bharat bandh, they have the freedom to burn buses, freedom to block roads.
'We have to be free of biases' - Javed Akhtar Are we really free? I am afraid it can't be answered in a yes or a no, because we as a society, as a nation, are rather paradoxical. There are countries where there is no freedom, you cannot write anything, you cannot say anything, you cannot protest against the establishment.
We are somewhere in between. I can write articles against the establishment, I can write about various cultures, sub-cultures, communities.
I can dissent on the most sensitive topic, but I can't do the same in a movie. That will be banned.
That will be censored. The people who matter are willing to give the common man freedom up to a point where it does not challenge the status quo.
And when it comes to that, there is no freedom. But we should not be pessimistic.
Since we have accepted the basic norm of freedom, we have got our basic morality right. In practice, we have to struggle and get complete and real freedom.
However, this ideal form of freedom is not possible without some kind of economic justice in the society. What is freedom to me? That I be allowed to live with all my identities.
I don't believe in a singular identity as it can be dangerous. Everybody should be free to protect his or her dignity.
I should be free to make choices - the kind of job I want, where I live, who I marry..
.Our law allows us but society is not very liberal, to put it mildly.
A lot of freedom is taken away from an individual not from law enforcement agencies but from the civil society, which itself cries for freedom. It's a contradiction.
We as individuals have to be free of biases, prejudices, opportunism, corruption and only then we can have a completely free society. 'You cannot change the way people think' - Pritish Nandy, filmmaker & columnist I was born into freedom and grew up with it.
For me, and for millions of Indians, freedom means everything. It is only recently that I find it under assault.
No, not only from the State, which has chosen to believe that the only way to ensure greater security for the nation is by trampling on the freedom of its individual citizens. So you have indiscriminate phone taps, unexplained encounters, custodial deaths, banned Internet sites and attempts to tap into private chats and emails.
These would have been unthinkable some years ago. But far worse than that it are the new incursions into personal freedom by radical fringe groups who want to tell us how to dress, what to eat and drink, how to pray to our different Gods, w h a t books to read, what movies to watch, who to marry.
This is what worries me most. You can change governments that intrude upon your personal freedoms.
But you cannot change the way some people think. The burning of books, the vandalising of libraries and art galleries, the outlawing of beer bars, beating up college girls who dress in jeans, prohibiting people below 25 from drinking, honour killings, and of course these stupid, meaningless bomb blasts meant to hurt and intimidate the common citizen are all signs of intolerance and erosion of our personal freedoms.
The magic of India has always been its celebration of freedom. If we allow that to be eroded, we will erode the greatness of this nation.
India is its many cultural and religious narratives that run concurrently. That is what makes us, us.
'How free are our tribals?' - Rahul Bose, actor & social activist While India can certainly boast of a democracy that holds, largely, free and fair elections, a judicial system that, in fits and starts, upholds constitutional liberties and a s e em - inglylive ly and vocal press, it would be worth examining what democracy has translated into in our everyday lives. How free are our women? Like the men, can they walk out at night without fear in our cities and villages? How free are India's Muslims? Can they step forward and name and shame Hindu-born terrorists like Hindus do in the reverse? Can young Muslims go to the press and speak out when they are rounded up after a terror attack as a matter of routine? How free are our Dalits? Can they say they are not discriminated against in private sector jobs in the country? How free are our tribals? Can they contentedly claim they have the same rights as our farmers? How free are our urban poor? Can they lay equal claim to the government services that their middleclass counterparts enjoy? How free are our linguistic minorities? Can Biharis claim they enjoy Mumbai's comforts with the same fearlessness as their Maharashtrian counterparts? How free are our politicians? Can they effect systemic change without a nod from the mining lobby/the real estate lobby/the industrial family house lobby/the 'trade interests' lobby? How free is the press? Which articles do they carry that are bought by people with the reader having no clue? Finally, how free are you? Free to, within the bounds of the Constitution, wear jeans to college, celebrate Valentine's Day, whistleblow on a powerful lobby, have a drink in a pub, choose a person of your choice to marry, speak out against the uncle who raped you.
You tell me. 'Freedom is being free of fear' - Rina Dhaka, designer Sixty-five years of Independence, but are we really free? Am I free to do a Hare Rama, Hare Krishna T-shirt with a logo of Lord Ram or Krishna to express my creativity? To be honest, I'd be scared.
I'm not free, even after years of Indian Independence. When we're not free, we live in fear that doesn't allow us to grow.
As a nation, we doubt everyone; we have no faith or trust in the goodness of the other. Truth is, we're paranoid of the powerful in this country, and they disempower us.
When we are living in fear, can we ever be free? Can I safely walk on the road without the fear of being killed by a terrorist? This is a new fear. People want to be free, people want liberty and people love democracy, yet do they really realise what freedom actually is? Is there space in our country to live freely, to do what our heart desires? I define freedom by being free of fear, being liberated.
It's freedom from anger. In our country, we're not even free to protest; look at Anna Hazare.
Is he free to demonstrate for his people? True freedom comes from inner freedom; we need to move ahead with a new confidence. Personally, we all need to free our minds from stereotypes and fear.
A celebration of freedom is incomplete if we live in fear and are not allowed to fulfil our creative pursuits. Being free in these times is also about being tough, e n t e r - prising, and genuine.
This free spirit will take our nation ahead. Express your freedom for only then can you enjoy and live life to its best.
Simply put, be free to think simply, naturally and spontaneously. 'Soon, we'll be a truly free country!' - Mary Kom, five-time world boxing champion This question is actually as complicated to answer as it sounds simple! I do believe that India has taken very large strides in becoming a truly free country, though there is still some way to go before we can be completely 'free'.
The increasing freedom in India is manifest in so many ways - options on occupations, including in sports being a viable career (thank God!); options on goods, technologies, entertainment options, travel, etc; options and increasing access to education; access to the best Indian and International cinema, which while still censored, is obviously being censored less and less and is reflecting the maturity and freedom of choice of the Indian audience - even the option to select one's own life partner, which would have been well near impossible only a few years ago! My personal experience in becoming a boxer does perhaps tell the story of the increasing freedom in India. From the time I was laughed at when I made the decision to become a boxer to now, when I am respected for what I am and what I have achieved - everything suggests a transition in attitudes.
That said, there are a lot of ways in which we still aren't free. We still struggle to control our population, to ensure the safety of women, to fight violence on various fronts, to control corruption, to increase education and literacy and to improve health.
Yet, positive steps have been taken and I have no doubt that in the coming years, we will be a truly free country! It is important to remember that almost all countries, including free societies such as America or Europe, have in their past or are now undergoing a phase of transformation, where they have fought or are fighting against restrictions on their freedom and have moved or are moving towards a free society. (less)Prateik in Smita Patil’s classic
And reportedly, the film, which highlighted the plight of young girls sold to affluent Indians in the Gulf by their poor parents, is not only going to be remade, but is also likely to feature the actress' son Prateik. Mumbai Mirror has learnt that producer Sunil Bohra has been relentlessly pursuing the original film's writer-director Sagar Sarhadi for the remake rights of the neo-classic.
A friend of the producer revealed to us that Sarhadi was against the remake of Bazaar, until the idea of casting Smita's son Prateik in the film was pitched. "Sunil tried very hard to convince Sagar that the story of Bazaar, which depicts how young girls from Hyderabad and other parts of India are sold to old Arab Sheikhs as brides, is more relevant today than ever before.
But, only when Prateik was mentioned as the prime contender to play the character Sarju, originally essayed by Farouq Shaikh, did Sagar agree to part with the film's rights," explained Bohra's friend. Reportedly, the remake will be directed by Hansal Mehta.
Bohra's friend added, "They are currently in the casting stage. However, Tabu is likely to be brought on-board to play Najma, the character essayed by Smita Patil in the original.
Smita played a Hyderabadi. Since, Tabu is from Hyderabad, she has the cultural background to carry off the role.
" When contacted, Bohra confirmed, "Yes, I have been very keen to remake Bazaar. At a time when we are so short of powerful scripts, Sagar Sarhadi's story just blew me away.
However, it's too early to divulge any details."

(less)SRK’s Don 2 release won’t be hampered
(Read: Shah Rukh's Don 2 runs into legal trouble? ) Farhan Akhtar's Excel Entertainment has denied infringing any copyright. Excel's legal consel sent a legal statement denying Nariman's claim.

The title of Don 2 has been approved by AMPTPP in favour of Excel Entertainment. Excel Entertainment states that there has been no undue influence on persons of Nariman Films.

(less)Jo Hum Chahein: Movie Review
And devoid of a star-studded cast, the film still boasts of high production values. What goes horribly wrong with the film then is that it's backed by an outmoded plotline that is certainly not jo hum chahein .
What annoys you is the hero's (Sunny Gill) incessant arrogance and cockiness. He reeks of overconfidence which impresses everyone from his babe (Simran Kaur Mundi) to boss (Alyy Khan) but the audience.
He takes his girlfriend to spiritual dates across temples, churches and gurudwara across the city. Until he wakes up one morning to realize he has lost his virginity to a nymphomaniac aunty (Achint Kaur).
As the narrative wanders aimlessly amidst ambition and love, the viewer seems more lost about the central plot of the picture. Until you realize it archaic and nothing more than Shah Rukh Khan's Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman (1992) revisited or for that matter Raj Kapoor's Shree 420 (1955).
The lovers part ways, the hero turns toy-boy of aunty and the heroine inevitably has to be pregnant. The only thing you derive pleasure from in the otherwise predictable proceedings is to see the downfall of the hero who was so full of himself throughout the first half.
The film certainly might be having its heart at the right place but the dated chronicle fails to touch your heart by any means. The romance is cheesy, the writing is verbose and the emotions are so soap-opera that it seems like watching a TV serial.
A multitude of songs only add to your tedium. And the second half almost seems like an endless saga with the hero trying to mend his ways.
While director Pawan Gill doesn't impress much in terms of storytelling, he ensures that the film is a technically sound product and extracts notable performances from the cast. The film is tailor-made as a launch pad for Sunny Gill and he makes a confident debut.
Unlike the recent amateur lot of first-timers, Sunny is natural in his act and appeal and has good screen presence (though he could let himself a little loose). A better script could tap the immense potential of this actor.
Simran Kaur Mundi is decent. Achint Kaur and Alyy Khan play their parts well.
But largely, Jo Hum Chahein certainly doesn't have what we wish from a film - entertainment! Verdict: Below Average

In theatres playing the 3D version of the film, the opening was 100 per cent. Cinemas playing the 2D version of Ra.
One witnessed 70 ? 100 per cent occupancy. The less than 100 per cent collections is not surprising as today being Diwali, considered to be a little dull for the box-office as a lot of Hindus do not go to the cinemas, busy with pooja, guests and other festivities at home.
Salman Khan’s Bodyguard was released across 2,700 screens and collected Rs 22 crore net on day one and Rs 85 crore net on the extended five-day weekend. The cost of making the film has been approximately Rs 150 crore, which includes print and marketing costs.
Producers Eros International and Red Chillies Entertainment (SRK’s company) have already recovered up to Rs 102 crore through the sale of cable & satellite rights (Rs 35 crore), music rights (Rs 15 crore) and brand tie-ups (Rs 52 crore). Ra.
One has tied up with 25 brands – one of the biggest ever marketing blitzkrieg for any Indian film. Kamal Jain, Chief Financial Officer of Eros International says: “Most of the marketing cost was borne by the brands which are associated with the movie.
” Eros is also distributing the film worldwide. Ra.
One will release in dubbed versions in Telugu and Tamil and is releasing in 250 screens across the South. Bodyguard grossed almost Rs 10 crore from the South.
With dubbed versions and a much wider release, Ra.One, according to Eros, should bring in at least double of what Bodyguard did.
With superstar Rajinikanth doing a cameo in Ra.One, the film offers an added attraction to the viewers in the South.
Bodyguard was a Southern remake and the Southern audiences had already seen the original version. Sphere: Related Content Posted in

(less)Bigg Boss 5's Nepal connection
The lone male in the house and Bollywood's favourite villain Shakti Kapoor would probably still wince if Nepal is mentioned to him. Three years ago, Kapoor triggered a row in southern Nepal's Birgunj city, where he had gone to shoot a Bhojpuri film being directed by Nepal's Sanu Shakya.
While Kapoor was playing a make-believe Indian villain who trafficked Nepali girls to India, the reel-life villainy act allegedly lapsed into real-life misdeed with the leading lady of the film, Nepali actor Rekha Thapa, saying the Bollywood stalwart had misbehaved with her. Another contestant, Norwegian model turned aspiring Bollywood actor Mahek Chahal, visited Kathmandu in 2004 when she took part in a show at Galaxy, a nightclub in the capital.
The nightclub erupted in violence after the then crown prince of Nepal, Paras Bir Bikram Shah, picked up a drunken brawl with some of the guests, including Nepal's blue-blooded and plutocracy. Another contestant, sexual minority rights activist and transgender Laxmi Narayan Tripathi, has been hailed by Nepal's sexual minorities.
"Nepal's lesbian-gay-bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community is very happy that Bigg Boss 5 included Indian third gender Laxmi Tripathi," Nepal's openly gay member of parliament and the founder of the gay rights movement in the conservative Himalayan republic, Sunil Babu Pant, said. Pant, who is currently in India's Bangalore city and watched the introductory episode Monday night with keen interest, said the inclusion of the outspoken and sophisticated Laxmi showed the Indian media was becoming more open and respectful of the community.
"We hope Bollywood will also start respecting (the community) and make movies on strong gay themes," Pant said. "We hope Bigg Boss will continue including LGBT members in the coming years and not just from India but also from neighbouring countries.

(less)Kim Kardashian files for divorce after 10 weeks
"I hope everyone understands this was not an easy decision," she said in a statement. "I had hoped this marriage was forever but sometimes things don't work out as planned.
" Humphries told TMZ he was "devastated" to learn his bride had filed for divorce and is "willing to do whatever it takes to make it work." The filing in Los Angeles County Superior Court provided few details, other than to state the couple have a prenuptial agreement that will dictate how they divide up their assets.
Kardashian is asking that both sides pay their own attorneys' costs and that a judge terminate Humphries' rights to spousal support. Kardashian, 31, and Humphries, 26, were wed Aug.
20 in a star-studded, black-tie ceremony at an exclusive canyon estate in the seaside enclave of Montecito, Calif., near Santa Barbara.
The couple's wedding registry at a Beverly Hills jeweler totaled $172,000 and included such items as a $1,650 coffee pot and two $1,250 sterling silver vegetable spoons. It was the first marriage for Humphries, who last played for the NBA's New Jersey Nets, and the second for Kardashian, who was married to music producer Damon Thomas from 2000 to 2004.
Kardashian's sisters and TV co-stars Kourtney Kardashian, 32, and Khloe Kardashian, 27, served as co-maids of honor. Kim Kardashian and Humphries began dating late last year and announced their engagement in May.
He proposed on bended knee with a 20.5-carat ring by spelling out "Will you marry me?" in rose petals.
The couple's marriage was the subject of a two-part special on E! Entertainment Television, which televises Kardashian's show that follows the model and her family. The special aired Oct.
9 and 10, two months after the ceremony, prompting online card company someecards.com to offer a greeting last summer that read: "Here's hoping Kim Kardashian's marriage lasts until her wedding special airs in October.
" Entertainment media have breathlessly reported every available detail on the relationship since it began, including signs of trouble earlier this month. Court filings show that Kardashian signed the petition on Sunday.
Meanwhile, Kardashian appeared to be getting on with her life on Monday, tweeting that she was looking forward to Tuesday's opening of her Kardashian Khaos fashion boutique in Las Vegas. "We are so excited!! Kardashian Khaos has arrived!," said the message.

Said SRK, My producers Ritesh Sidhwani , Farhan Akhtar and I are wondering where such stories come from. Even when we made the original 2006 version of Don; we had done our due diligence and taken whatever permissions where there to be sought from the script point of view.
While my producers are best qualified to give a fitting reply to the whole matter, I as a lead actor can say that as for the sequel, the Amitabh Bachchan Don never had a sequel. So where is the question of us copying anything.
Farhan and his team have worked on the script, I know for a fact that we haven't copied from anywhere and this is an original script.'' SRK added, It is irresponsible even on the part of those reporting to say someone has infringed the copyright because there are always people who raise their heads at the nth hour with allegations.

Nariman Films, with their malafide intention and to extort unjustified and unearned monies from Excel Entertainment, have given the legal notice, which is baseless and devoid of merits. Excel Entertainment is suitably replying to the legal notice sent by the Advocates of Nariman Films.
Excel Entertainment shall defend themselves and shall not permit Nariman Films to hamper the release of Don-2 under any circumstances whatsoever. The fact of Excel Entertainment making Don 2 has been in the public domain since 2009.
It seems that it has now become a practice to give notices just before release of a film to extract monies. We at Excel Entertainment have done nothing wrong and shall stick to the correct legal and moral principals and defend what is right.

(less)I am not a romantic: Shah Rukh Khan
SRK epitomizes romance. Girls go weak in the knees every time he goes down on his and proposes to his lady love.
The superstar however denies being a romantic! "I know I am known for my portrayals of Raj and Rahuls but I am not a romantic at all. I am shy with women.
I've always wanted to play the 'bad guy' roles. I did play them in Baazigar and Darr .
I want to do it more and Don has come along at the right time. I am not at all like Don in real life but its fun to play characters that are not at all like you.
As an actor that thrills you" said Shah Rukh while promoting Don 2. He added "Don is everything every guy wants to be but never gets to be.
He has fast cars, faster women. The second installment of Don is leaner, meaner and sexier.

(less)Mani Ratnam reunites with Bharat Shah
Bobby Bedi of Kaleidoscope Entertainment bought the rights of Alaipayuthey and remade it into Saathiya in 2002. A source informed Mumbai Mirror, "Bharat bhai shares a very good personal and professional rapport with Mani sir.
They had co-produced Saathiya with Yash Chopra earlier. The venture turned out to be a hit.
Bharat Bhai was keen to buy the remake rights of Thalapathi as the script and the treatment of the film has all the pre-requisites for an entertaining Hindi film." Thalapathi starring Rajinikanth , Mammootty and Shobana in the lead roles with Arvind Swamy, Srividya, Amrish Puri, Bhanupriya, Nagesh, and Charuhasan in supporting characters was inspired by the friendship between Karna and Duryodhana in the Hindu epic, Mahabharata.
"Bharat Bhai flew down to south India and after a long discussion with Mani, finalised the deal. His company, Mega Bollywood Pvt Limited (same company that made Devdas) bought the remake rights of the film at a hefty amount.
The film will be directed by Puja Jatinder Bedi, who is currenlty awaiting the release of his debut film Ghost," added the source. Bharat Shah confirmed the story and added, "We have bought the remake rights of Thalapati.
The project will commence after the release of Ghost." Having worked behind the scenes for films like Mangal Pandey , The Myth and Saathiya, Puja is excited for this big challenge.
She said, "The film was made in 1991 so I plan to modernise parts of the story as well as a few action sequences. However, I plan to keep the screenplay and the characters intact.

Kardashian's divorce attorney, Laura Wasser, did not return a phone message seeking comment. Humphries' sports agent, Marc Cornstein, also did not return a phone message.

(less)Agneepath satellite rights sell for 41 crore
It also overtakes what Star Network paid for this year's big Diwali release, RA.One , trade sources said.
Jayantilal Gada, CMD, Pen India Pvt Ltd, the agency that aids the purchase of films for Zee Cinema, justifies the hefty price tag, saying that channels study the production banner's track record on the small screen before pitching to buy the satellite rights. "We chose to buy Agneepath over several other biggies because Karan's (producer Karan Johar of Dharma Productions) movies have always delivered great numbers.
And the promo of this film showed promise," he said. Without commenting on the figures, trade analyst Amod Mehra says, "There are only a handful of leading satellite channels in the market.
Likewise, there are only four or five really bankable stars, and not more than 10 big films a year. Zee has shelled out the money for Agneepath to break the pattern of Karan's films going to either Star or Sony, and to strengthen their market position.
" According to the trade circuit, the TV satellite rights market has grown more than 10 times in the last decade alone. "Big flicks bring channels high TRPs and bumper ad revenue.
And no channel keeps a film to itself. Syndication is a common practice, and it also helps recover costs, that otherwise wouldn't make economical sense," Amod said, recalling that the 2007 hit, 'Jab We Met', was the first film in recent times to be syndicated to different channels.

(less)Don 2 in legal trouble
And since the producers of the remake weren't given the rights to make a sequel, Nariman Films has sent them a legal notice and is suing them for copyright infringement. The producers at Nariman Films say, "We have raised our objection through our advocates Digvijay Chopra and Iva Bansal.
" Confirming that a legal notice has been sent to Excel Entertainment, Red Chillies Entertainment, Reliance Entertainment, Farhan Akhtar, Ritesh Sidhwani, Shah Rukh Khan and Baba Arts, Digvijay Chopra states: "The remake rights were given only for the film Don: The Chase Begins Again , starring Shah Rukh Khan, by an agreement, which expired in 2009. Thereafter, they never renewed it or even take any prospective rights from Nariman films.
" While Baba Arts was not involved in the production, the advocates point out they had originally acquired the rights, which were then sold to Excel Entertainment for Rs 1.25 crore in 2005, with the knowledge of Nariman Films.
Further Iva Bansal explains that without any renewal of the remake rights, Excel Entertainment and Red Chillies Entertainment have gone ahead and made Don 2 . "Not only have they infringed upon the title registered by Nariman Films, i.
e. Don and Don 2: Return Of The King , which in this matter, is a second infringement.
The first infringement is Don 2 , made without taking the necessary rights as per the law," she states. Bansal also explains that the title Don 2 has been copyrighted in the name of Nariman Films in January 2005.
"Reliance Entertainment has taken the distribution rights without any No Objection Certificate (NOC) from Nariman Films who hold the negatives of the original film Don . We shall also legally proceed with Paramount Films as we are informed that they are the overseas distributors," she maintained.
When asked why Nariman Films didn't initiate any action against the makers of Don 2: The Chase Continues , before or during filming, the advocates elaborated: "The reason is because all the production houses and senior and influential members of the film industry made the partners of Nariman films believe by way of undue influence and fraud that they (Nariman Films) have sold all their rights for their original film Don and are in no position to proceed legally to vindicate their right for the Amitabh Bachchan starrer, and even sent a legal notice to Nariman Films to confirm the same." However, Nariman Films has now come to know from various sources that the advocates they first consulted are on the legal panel of the opposite party.
Now the original producers have approached another law firm and have learnt that the case of infringement, undue influence and fraud, is clearly evident in this case. "And after learning the same they have taken legal action," summed up the advocates for Nariman Films.
Chopra and Bansal reiterated that they will be taking legal action against the makers of Don 2: The Chase Continues at the High Court as well as criminal courts for necessary relief. "We will be approaching the courts for stay on the release and promotions as well as confiscating all the Infringed Copies under the Copyright Act," said Chopra and Bansal.

(less)Ladies vs Ricky Bahl: Movie Review
And like the title, the viewer is openly informed about Ricky Bahl's job profile though people around him take a while to figure it out. So Ricky (Ranveer Singh) is Sunny, Dev, Iqbal for different girls who he cons in individual instances.
Charm or cleverness, he uses whatever works best to his advantage to swindle the unsuspecting target. But then three of his female victims - Raina (Dipannita Sharma), Dimpy (Parineeti Chopra) and Saira (Aditi Sharma) team up to get even with him.
They hire the services of a smart salesgirl Ishika (Anushka Sharma) who they use as a bait to trap the conman. Ishika poses as daughter of a NRI hotelier who's on a business visit to Goa to invest in property.
The idea is to lure him into a business partnership and rip off his riches for revenge. But then cupid strikes and everything goes for a toss.
The film starts off impressively and comes straight to the point without wandering aimlessly. At times it seems too convenient for the victims to part off with their money at the drop of a hat.
And consequently it seems even more convenient for a certified conman like Ricky to fall for the trap set by the girl gang. However, the con-games are crisp and executed with such swiftness that you never get time to notice any loose ends.
Since we are conversant with the con artist from start, any major suspense element in the plot is ruled out. Structurally the film reminds of the Hollywood flick John Tucker Must Die with it's plotline of three girls trying to get even with a guy by setting him up with another girl.
What saves it from getting into the chick-flick mode is that the girls are not merely betrayed in love but also in business and their revenge mechanism involves smarter cons over momentary cheap-thrills. That takes Devika Bhagat's screenplay a notch higher (though the confessional climax is evocative of her earlier work in Bachna Ae Haseeno where Ranbir Kapoor seeks forgiveness from three girls).
Also the Ranveer-Anushka smooching chemistry seems directly derived from their last flick Band Baaja Baaraat . The major hiccup in this otherwise engaging film is that it falls prey of the typical trappings of Bollywood.
As romance takes over the con-games, the smart-n-saucy film is substituted by a tepid tale where the conman wants to come clean and change his ways for that one girl in life. That makes for a lame climax and a conventional end.
The graph of the narrative drops somewhere in the second half and plunges even further as one realizes mixing con with cupid might not be the best of ideas. Thankfully the pacing is perfect and the film never seems stretched.
Irrespective of its minor blemishes, director Maneesh Sharma succeeds in striking a constant connect with the audience and also extracts decent performances from the entire cast. Ranveer Singh glides into his multiple con-artist characters effortlessly and radiates such charm that you don't blame the ladies while falling for him.
Anushka Sharma comes across as affable but a standard smile pasted on her face sometimes seems overdone. Nevertheless she is alluring in her act and appearance.
Thankfully the other three ladies never get overshadowed. Dipannita Sharma is amazingly confident.
Aditi Sharma is endearing. Debutante Parineeti Chopra as the blabbermouth gets the best lines and never overdoes her Punjabi kudi part.
While Ladies vs Ricky Bahl doesn't exceed expectations (like Band Baaja Baaraat ), it doesn't con you in the name of entertainment either. Verdict: Good

(less)Juhi Chawla to turn singer?
Singing is something that I am getting hang of. I may take up singing in future for sure," said the actress who is focusing on off beat films these days.
In last few years she has been seen in films like "My Brother Nikhil", "Jhankaar Beats" and "3 Deewarein". Her last release was the critically acclaimed film "I AM".
Though the film has been appreciated a lot, Juhi didn't get any awards for her performance. However, the 44-year-old is not concerned as she believes in associating herself with strong content.
"It's heart-warming..
.wherever 'I AM' has been showcased, I get a wonderful response from audiences.
It's a low budget film, we couldn't do marketing on a large scale. I believe the content matters more than anything else.
"Awards or no awards, it doesn't matter if your audience likes your film. The world will realise it someday.
I am anyways not bothered about it," she said. The former Miss India , who hails from Ludhiana, will now be seen playing a Punjabi woman in the romantic comedy " Son Of Sardar ".
"'Son Of Sardars' as the title itself suggests is about the Punjabi family and I am playing a Punjabi woman in it. It's a typical Punjabi life where they have a house in the middle of the farm.
It's a mad family. It's a feel good humor," Juhi told to IANS.
The film is being directed by Ashwani Dhir and is produced by Akshay Kumar's production house Hari Om Entertainment. It also features Ajay Devgn and Sonakshi Sinha .
Juhi, who will be share screen space with Sanjay Dutt in the film, says: "He is a really sweet guy. It's great working with him.
I have just worked with him for two days for this film."
(less)Deposit 1cr before Ra.One's release: Court to SRK
One . "The defendants (Shah Rukh, his production house Red Chillies Entertainment and Eros Entertainment) are directed to deposit a sum of Rs one crore as pay-order to the court and then release the movie," the division bench of Chief Justice Mohit Shah and Justice Roshan Dalvi said.
The court was hearing the petition filed by television producer and writer Yash Patnaik, who contends that he is the original copyright owner of the concept and the content of RA.One , produced by Red Chillies Entertainment.
The court added that if the defendants failed to deposit the money tomorrow, an injunction against the movie's release would become operational. "It is the most unfortunate part of the film industry that people use others' concepts and then don't want to pay or give them credit," the bench remarked.
The court has kept the final decision on the issue of copyright violation pending, and would hear arguments in due course of time. RA.
One , starring Shah Rukh, Kareena Kapoor and Arjun Rampal, is slated to release on October 26. Patnaik had sought a stay to the film's release until he was given credit for the concept of the futuristic superhero that Shah Rukh plays in RA.
One . He had sought 10 per cent of the profits, in case he was not given the credit.
His lawyer, senior advocate Ravi Kadam, had argued that the superhero character resembled the one in Patnaik's concept of 2006, in "attributes and appearance". "The super-villain of Patnaik's script was called 'One', which has been used by Shah Rukh in the movie's title," Kadam said.
Shah Rukh's lawyer, senior advocate Virendra Tulzapurkar, had said that his client's script was completely different. Also, "Patnaik cannot claim copyright as he had developed his concept with a team of experts he had engaged," Tulzapurkar argued.
Distributor Eros Entertainment's lawyer, senior advocate Janak Dwarkadas, had said that Eros had acquired world distribution rights at Rs 150 crore and started transporting prints to theatres. No stay should be granted at the last moment, he said.
According to Patnaik, he had discussed the concept with RA.One 's script-writer, Mushtaq Sheikh, in 2006.
The judges, while adjourning the hearing for a later date, however remarked that "prima facie there has been a copyright violation". Tweet

Shahrukh Khan says Don-2 is original
The media must also look into the merits of the entire case before reporting. After all many people have worked hard on the script.
I have full respect for the media and I know that 99 per cent of the people do not fall for wrong leads; however even that one percent who tend to get swayed must try and hear out both versions of a story.'' Excel Entertainment has not infringed any copyright leave alone that of Don, starring Amitabh Bachchan by producing Don 2.
Further, Excel Entertainment is the bona-fide author and owner of copyright of the Films "Don The Chase Begins Again" (i.e.
Don 1), which has been confirmed by Nariman Films in writing. Excel is also the owner of the copyrights of Don 2.
In 2005, Nariman Films has given rights to Excel Entertainment, in perpetuity, for making "Don The Chase Begins Again". Don 2 is a sequel of "Don The Chase Begins Again" alongwith the ownership to the underlying work therein.
The entire story and dialogue of Don 2 has been prepared by Farhan and the other team members of Excel Entertainment. The title of Don 2 has been approved by AMPTPP in favour of Excel Entertainment.
Excel Entertainment states that there has been no undue influence on persons of Nariman Films.
We at Excel Entertainment have done nothing wrong and shall stick to the correct legal and moral principals and defend what is right
(less)Ajay Devgn's the new Himmatwala!
A source revealed, "Sajid Khan is one f the top most commercial filmmaker of recent times. After the success of Heyy Babyy and Housefull, he is also one of the most soight after directors.
Vashu Bhagnani had signed him for the project some time back, reportedly, for Rs 12 crore. Ajay Devgn too has been signed for the yet untitled project.
He too has received a big sum of money speculated to be around Rs 15-18 crore." "Sajid Khan is a movie buff and a self proclaimed lover of the 80s classics.
he has always tried to maintain some element of the old films in his directorial ventures. In Housefull for instance, he incorporated the trademark Mithunda pelvic thrust in the Pappa Jag Jayega song.
He is a huge Sridevi fan as well. Himmatwala was an obvious choice for remake.
Everyone loved his idea and the script is now under process," added the source. In fact, Sajid is also trying to get rights for the hit music of the original film.
"In the past, Sajid had bought rights of Apni Toh Jaise Taise for his film Housefull. It is likely that he would buy the rights of the Himmatwala songs like Naino Mein Sapna, Taki O Taki and Ladki Nahi Lakdi Ka Khamba hai.
However, everything is being kept under wraps at the moment. The producers want to make a big official announcement soon," informed another source.
When contacted Vashu Bhagnani the producer of the film said, "Yes I am making a film with Sajid Khan and Ajay Devgn but it will go on the floors next year. Nothing has been finalised yet.
" When asked about the film being a remake of Himmatwala, he said, "It is a commercial action romantic film but it is a fresh subject." Sajid Khan refused to divulge any details either and said, "Vashuji, Ajay and I are coming together for the film.
I had told Vashuji that after Housefull 2 finishes, I will make a film for him and I am standing by my commitment. I am directing the film and it will be a typical Sajid Khan film, which promises wholesome entertainment for the entire family.
As far as the subject of the film goes, it is too early to give any details and I cannot disclose the subject at this point of time."

(less)Top 10 Most Disappointing Hindi Films of 2011
They might not essentially be flops but turned low on the immense expectations that they came with. As we reach the yearend starts the predictable countdown to the best of the year.
While most award functions will go on to honour the good works of 2011, we go a step ahead to list down some of the most disappointing films of the year. They might not essentially be flops but turned low on the immense expectations and promise that they came with.
Here's the Top 10 list..
. 1.
) Aarakshan Director: Prakash Jha Cast: Amitabh Bachchan , Manoj Bajpayee, Saif Ali Khan , Deepika Padukone , Prateik Babbar With Prakash Jha's past repertoire one may reserve the right to believe that his films are social, sensible, well-researched, hard-hitting and conveys a message. But he proved us wrong with Aarakshan .
This film touched its core theme of educational reservations only partially and peripherally. Jha played safe by barely emphasizing anything about reservations beyond what is common knowledge.
The issue and its implications were seen through the confines of the viewpoint of its principal protagonist (Amitabh Bachchan) and the narrative lacked any broader perspective on the national issue. Not only does the film fail to offer any solution to the issue, it doesn't even illuminate interlinked concerns like the debate over the extent of reservations or the aftermath of compromise on merit.
Moreover the narrative very conveniently overlooks one of the most potent and prevalent hidden-agenda behind the quota system - the vote-bank politics of government. The film reeked of idealism and yet attempted to tackle a practical issue! 2.
) Dhobi Ghat Director: Kiran Rao Cast: Prateik, Monica Dogra , Aamir Khan , Kriti Malhotra What would you call a film whose central characters comprise of an aspiring actor, a photographer, a painter and a videographer? 'Art' cinema! Well jokes apart and with due respect to arthouse cinema, which can be an enriching and exquisite experience, Kiran Rao's directorial debut seems like a pretentious attempt to adapt to the prerequisites of the offbeat genre. Minimalism, as a tool, is effective when it adds merit to the medium.
But here it only leads to nothingness in the narrative. Dhobi Ghat is the kind of cinema where you expect the end-credits to appear after any random scene in the concluding reels.
The long pauses, slow pacing, extended shot-taking, erratic editing and a murky look at Mumbai clearly work towards giving the film its intended artistic aura. However the story lacks the depth that could have added more meaning to this tangential look at the town.
Blame it to the weak chemistry of the characters or the premature culmination of the plot but the melancholy of the characters fails to move you beyond a point. Mumbai is predictably captured by means of ordinary people like housemaid, vegetable vendor, fisherwoman, street rat-killers to the laundryman ( dhobi ) - like how it is regularly portrayed to the international audience in its underprivileged glory.
Unfortunately the depiction of Mumbai as an additional character in the film doesn't add any new dimension to the narrative. All it does is give a new Indian ambassador to the world - so after dabbawala , it's now the dhobi .
Is that what you mean by world cinema? 3.) Game Director: Abhinay Deo Cast: Abhishek Bachchan, Kangana Ranaut, Sarah Jane Dias, Boman Irani Coming from ever-bankable Farhan Akhtar and Delhi Belly director Abhinay Deo, Game was surprisingly a weak attempt.
It only played with our sensibilities. The narrative of Game was as much inconsistent as the continuously changing geography of the plot that kept shifting from Thailand , Istanbul , India, UK to Greece.
Under the guise of an espionage thriller and a slick murder mystery, Game ended up being a formula flick driven by ancient cliched conflicts like badle-ki-aag and jaydaad-ki-ladaai . It was too convoluted, cliched, convenient and coincidental for a suspense thriller.
Surprisingly Farhan Akhtar's dialogues only added to the corniness. The direction was mediocre and storytelling blemished with too many loose ends.
Abhishek Bachchan tried too hard to be cool but he needs to 'get idea' of good scripts. 4.
) Mausam Director: Pankaj Kapur Cast: Shahid Kapoor , Sonam Kapoor What you expect to be a timeless love story turns to be an endless episode in Pankaj Kapur's Mausam . Kapur uses actual unfortunate events from communal riots to terrorist attacks as the backdrop to symbolize changing seasons of love in his coming of age love story.
And the sluggish story makes an attempt to push itself 'only' during these adversities. So disillusioned are you after a point that you hopelessly pray for another catastrophe to strike and thereby end your turmoil.
Sonam Kapoor appears too juvenile for the role and lacks the maturity and range to handle a character which spans a decade and demands diverse emotions. The entire basis of this ill-fated love story heavily depends on the chemistry between Sonam and Shahid but it certainly wasn't of the kind that one could rave about.
And with their mediocre rapport, you don't feel as much for the love birds as one should ideally have. Marred by its unrelenting length, what Mausam serves in its three-hour runtime is so shallow and stretched that you yearn for the onset of the next season.
5.) Rascals Director: David Dhawan Cast: Sanjay Dutt, Ajay Devgn, Kangana Ranaut Rascals is what one can call a 'vacation' filmmaking stint where everyone works on the film as if they were on a 'holiday' and the audience is expected to 'leave' their senses behind.
The actors make least efforts to add conviction to their performances and the patchy writing just allows them to play as they please. Invariably the director tries to camouflage the shallowness in the story by adding depth only in the decibel levels of the dialogue delivery.
The one-upmanship between Sanjay Dutt and Ajay Devgn doesn't work primarily because Kangana Ranaut doesn't share any chemistry with either men and so their persistent pursuit to get the girl falls flat. Also thanks to the dull camaraderie, the viewer never really bothers which hero would actually win the heroine in the end.
The humour lacks imagination or wit and one can easily see through most of the worn-out gags. You laugh more on the corniness of the scenes than the comedy per se.
The tone of humour is consistently loud and commotional. Ajay Devgn keeps screaming most of the time and hams outrageously.
Sanjay Dutt doesn't seem interested. Kangana Ranaut is ill at ease in comedy.
She struggles to hold her own and emerges as a bimbo in her act. Rascals ended up being a silly and stupid comedy! 6.
) Thank You Director: Anees Bazmee Cast: Akshay Kumar, Sonam Kapoor, Bobby Deol, Irrfan Khan, Suniel Shetty In times when comedy is being redefined with rational and refreshing wit, the likes of Anees Bazmee have demoted themselves to the old school of humour. This is another comedy on the theme of adultery, perhaps with commercial considerations of reviving the success of Bazmee's No Entry .
Akshay Kumar is ruthlessly repetitive and remains in his comfort zone. Knowing that Sonam Kapoor and Bobby Deol can't act for nuts, Bazmee tries to balance it off by giving Irrfan Khan and Rimmi Sen more mileage.
And though the two try their best to salvage the situation with their decent comic timings, the load is too much for them to handle. Sadly this Shaadi No.
1 -meets- Biwi No.1 narrative is adulterated with so many tacky references that you end up saying thank you but no thank you.
7.) Ra.
One Director: Anubhav Sinha Cast: Shah Rukh Khan, Kareena Kapoor , Arjun Rampal Shah Rukh Khan's superhero character takes too long to boot in this science fiction flick. G.
One arrives just five minutes before the interval point by when you have already restarted your system several times, which has been hanging into nothingness. And the film's title character Ra.
One, a skeletal villain, gets a face (Arjun Rampal) even later in the second half. Is it worth the wait? Only intermittently and inconsistently! While the sci-fi film is able to pull off some visual dazzlery, fast-paced storytelling and thrilling action sequences, it relies too much on SRK's stardom than the script.
The title character Ra.One is not half as menacing as it claims to be.
Not only is Arjun Rampal inducted pretty late in the plot, being an 'outcome' of virtual reality he is too shallow and ineffective as the main villain Also the film has a very crude sense of humour and surprisingly the dialogues are more vulgar than witty for a film largely targeted at the family audience. With the theory that anything sells in the name of Shah Rukh, you are served with butt-spanking, crotch-grabbing, cleavage-popping, nose-picking, condom innuendoes, gayish and garish gags.
While any other actor doing that would have been tagged as 'cheap', girls going gaga over SRK would still like to call it 'charming' over here. At best Ra.
One qualified for a 'one' time watch. 8.
) Dil Toh Bachcha Hai Ji Director: Madhur Bhandarkar Cast: Ajay Devgn, Emraan Hashmi, Omi Vaidya A love story seen through the male perspective, Dil Toh Bachcha Hai Ji with three stars in its cast failed to achieve (or even come close to) what Pyaar Ka Punchnama did with its complete new cast (arriving a few months later). That's because the latter had a brilliant story to say while the former didn't.
Surprisingly the makers should have sensed this considering both the films came from the same production house. Madhur Bhandarkar's first attempt at making a lighthearted 'feel-good' film got an adult censor certificate but it certainly turned out to be a certified childish attempt at comedy.
The film tried too hard to be funny but became bland and repetitive after a point. The pacing was too laidback, proceedings too predictable and the graph of the narrative never picked up.
Emraan Hashmi was in his comfort zone. Ajay Devgn seemed uncomfortable.
Shahazn Padamsee irritated with her constant childish demeanour. And the only (unintentionally) funny moment in the film is whenever actor Aditya Raj Kapoor attempts to speak any casual line.
It's good that Madhur Bhandarkar is sticking to his brand of expose cinema (making ' Heroine ' next), because this juvenile attempt has exposed his weakness in handling other genres. 9.
) Mere Brother Ki Dulhan Director: Abbas Ali Zafar Cast: Katrina Kaif , Imran Khan, Ali Zafar It's more than obvious with a self-explanatory title like Mere Brother Ki Dulhan that the story of the film would be about a guy falling for his brother's bride-to-be. Predictability seeps in this Yash Raj romantic comedy from the title itself.
When Imran Khan does a takeoff on the three ruling Khans of Bollywood in the opening credits, you somehow sense that the film has defined its domain. And it isn't long before you realize that the narrative is taking the route of Shah Rukh Khan's Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge .
By the time the boy comprehends his love for the girl, she is already engaged to someone else. Only this time it's the boy's brother - so it's more of an inhouse affair! With Imran Khan restricted in his range and the immensely talented Ali Zafar being reduced to a second fiddle and grossly underused, it's left up to Katrina to save the ship which she ably does as far as the average script allows her to.
Mere Brother ki Dulhan was relatively old and familiar entertainment. 10.
) Tell Me O Kkhuda Director: Hema Malini Cast: Esha Deol, Dharmendra , Vinod Khanna , Rishi Kapoor Life seems to have come full circle for Hema Malini . In an attempt to reintroduce daughter Esha Deol with Tell Me O Kkhuda , the yesteryear dreamgirl does a spinoff on Dil Aashna Hai (1992), a film with which she attempted to launch herself as a feature filmmaker.
And the outcome is the same - dud! A girl who learns she's an adopted child sets on an aimless, endless and pointless journey to find her biological parents. She has managed to preserve her 24-year old hospital birth tag (phew) that wins her paternal prescriptions from the municipal hospital.
And every time the hospital is refurbished, she gets new options for Daddy dear! Hema Malini's direction is slack, shallow and lacks the dramatic punches when the scene demands and, on the contrary, gets melodramatic when not required. There is no palpable tension when the protagonist confronts any of her prospective papas for the first time.
And by the time Esha Deol walks with 'four fathers' in the climax, you realize that this dull drama dates back to your 'forefathers'
(less)Abhay Deol to sing again
For the first time, Abhay is paired opposite Genelia D'Souza. Directed by Navdeep Singh and produced by Ekta Kapoor, the film goes on the floor soon and is expected to be released next year.
