Azim looks up to Salman, SRK and Aamir Khan
To make his character in "Qasam Se Qasam Se" appear realistic, Azim frequented call centre offices to absorb the finer nuances of the people working there. "It was quite a relevation for me as an actor.
I witnessed not only people's mannerisms but also the activities they indulge in during the break hour. Looking into the mirror, some guys would be busy ruffling their hair and taking care of their looks, while some would busy binging.
And there would others catching up with family and friends over their cell phones. This has helped shaped my character in the film.
" Azim feels that all our veteran actors were keen observers and would translate that on screen. "Whether it were the legendary actors like Dilip Kumar or the late Raj Kapoor or Dev Anand , they were schools in themselves.
I am a great fan of Salman Khan , Shah Rukh Khan and Aamir Khan and look at them as a student who looks upon his guru. I am mastering the art of acting watching their films," he smiles

(less)I never thought I'd be a desirable woman: Sameera Reddy
"My name in the list means a lot to me. As as a young girl, I never thought even in my wildest dreams that I would become a desirable woman.
I yearned for a perfect body as I was ugly duckling in school. But now that I have entered films, I believe that beauty is hidden in the imperfections of people and it all depends on how you use them.
That's my definition of desirable and I am glad to have made it to the list," says Sameera. The actor is basking in the success of her last Tamil release opposite Madhavan and has Padma Shri Priyadarshan's Tezz to look forward to.
Sameera has now decided that she will do a mix of performance-oriented and glamorous characters on screen, something that Simran and Jyothika did in Kollywood. So is the report true that Sameera wants to become the next Simran and Jyothika? "You cannot become another person.
I had said that I look up to both Simran and Jyothika, who had a mixed bag of roles- performance-oriented and cute characters. Both had their own fan following .
They are my role models and I want to have a beautiful lineup of characters like them," says the actor
(less)Sherlyn Chopra likes being unconventional
Be it politics, cinema, sports, business or any other arena, women across the globe including India are in great form mentally, physically and consciously to undertake greater responsibilities and tougher challenges that are often encountered on paths less travelled." Sherlyn is also happy that she has gone from being just a pin-up girl to an entrepreneur.
Says she, "The rapid metamorphosis in my case would not have been possible had the mindsets of the majority of the people in the Hindi film industry continued to be goverened by prejudices. I look upto entrepreneurs who command respect and attention for daring to think out of the box and act accordingly.
They do not have a herd mentality. What they have is unadulterated creativity which is set on fire by courage.
" Naming films like " The Dirty Picture ", " Erin Brokovich ", " No One Killed Jessica "," The Black Swan " as cinema that has changed the way we think, Sherlyn says, "Unconventionality is no longer a taboo. It is being applauded and celebrated by both the classes and the masses.
The pulse of the youth is racing towards liberalisation. And I'm truly loving it.
" Asked why she decided to give us photographs that resembled those of the " Jism 2 " campaign, the actor quips, "I have pushed the envelope by choosing to cover my nakedness with nothing but pure consciousness."

(less)Flash mob greets Imran at New York University
"I had a blast at NYU. Everyone was so enthusiastic, they put on a very polished, confident show, and the surprise flash mob at the end was perfectly executed.
My best wishes to all the students involved," Imran said in a statement. The students had been practising for the performance for over two weeks, ahead of Imran's visit to New York as part of the promotional tour.
"As the president of NYU Dillagi, a Bollywood dance team, I knew we had to have simpler steps that the general public would be able to do and we sent videos out to the public. I thought that the flash mob came out even better than expected since people kept joining the mob throughout the sequence and it definitely surprised those that did not know of it ahead of time," Mohit Chhatpar, coordinator of the flash mob, said.
"It was really fun to be doing a flash mob and having Imran among us was all the more fun. He was very sporting and interacted with the students.
We are excited about this movie as well and are glad he could come and be among us to talk about his movie," he added. The Dharma Productions' film, also starring Kareena Kapoor, is set to hit theatres Feb 10.

"It's been 20 years for that film. So, obviously now I will have to upgrade this story.
It will be the same realistic love story but with a modern theme," Suri told IANS. Aashiqui won critical accolades after its release at the time.
It also catapulted the careers of lead actors Rahul Roy and Anu Agarwal, who forayed into Bollywood with this film. Suri is also set to hunt for new faces for the sequel.
"I will cast fresh faces with a new boy and a new girl," said Mohit. While some are referring to Aashiqui 2 as a sequel, others are calling it a remake.
However, producer Mukesh Bhatt of Vishesh Films sets the record straight. "It is neither a sequel nor a remake.
It can be said as the musical series of Aashiqui ..

(less)I'm fed up of talking about SRK: Nikhil Dwivedi
"I don't want to talk about Shah Rukh Khan. He is a big star.
I am nowhere near him or any other star. Whenever I talk about him it seems as if I am trying to gain publicity and that is not the case.
So, it is best if I don't discuss him at all," Nikhil told PTI. Though his debut film didn't do so well, Nikhil's police act in the 2010 film 'Ravaan' was appreciated despite the film bombing at the box office.
The actor says the Mani Ratnam film was a "step up" for him. "I am very proud of Ravaan.
It didn't do well at the box office but for me it was a step up. My performance was noticed even though the role was small," he said.
The actor also received both critical acclaim and a thumbs up from the audience for his role in 'Shor in the City', where he played one of the three main characters. "It is satisfying to know that my work in 'Shor in the City' was appreciated.
The film was both critically and commercially successful. It was a double bonanza for me.
" "Every film that I have done so far has helped me in some way or the other. I am at such a point in my career from where I only have to make my way up.
I know I am on the right path," Nikhil said. The actor is all set to reprise the role of Sunny Deol in the remake of 1985 film 'Arjun' and will also be seen in a love story with a twist.
"I am working in the remake of 'Arjun'. Other than that I am also doing a violent love story.
It is not blood and gore. There will soon be an announcement," he said.
He recently married his long-time girlfriend Gaurie Pandit in a glitzy ceremony. Nikhil says that there hasn't been any "drastic change" in life post-marriage.
"Life has not changed drastically. The only difference now is that I share my home with someone else and I have become more responsible and sensitive towards her," Nikhil said.

(less)Rohit Roys' favourite action movies
Uma Thurman kicked a** and was better than most action heroes. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Amazing effects and great action.
One of the best films to come out of HK in the last decade. House Of Flying Daggers: Beautifully shot and with great sound effects.
Every rain drop was audible. Poetry in motion! Sholay: One of the all time best spaghetti westerns to come out of India.
Best screenplay, super action, 70 mm entertainment and of course, Amitabh Bachchan! Deewar: Although not that much of an action film, the godown action sequence with Peter is so memorable that I'd list the film only for that one fight. And again, of course the angry young Vijay.
Enter the Dragon: The first of the martial arts biggies from Hong kong to throw up a big hollywood star, the legend Bruce lee. Rocky: Raw power coupled with sex appeal gave birth to the ultimate action star Sylvester Stallone and the underlying emotional turmoil of his character makes the film a dramatic treat.
Desperadoes: A small budget film with typical Mexican spaghetti action and the chemistry between its lead pair Antonio Banderas and Salma Hayek took the film to another level. Phool Aur Kaante: Rise of another action star Ajay Devgan.
I still remember his entry in it, straddled on two superbikes. Robot: Not only am I a huge fan of the superstar Rajnikanth but also this is the first Indian film I saw with action sequences that had such extraordinary special effects.
Dabangg: Salman Khan on an adrenaline high! Loved the action and his style. Have seen it thrice and wouldn't mind seeing it again.
Rambo: Again a franchise of Sly Stallone which was top class muscle and action with a back story of a misled mercenary. Ghayal: No action list can be complete without Sunny Deol.
Street fighting with raw emotions and no frills, cables and special effects. Pure 'Jat' power.
XXX: Van Diesel hits paydirt with this high octane action flick. Perfect blend of high class car muscle, sexy chicks and steroid bodies! All James Bond Movies: When it comes to cool action, gizmos, style and sex, you can't beat Bond! Terminator: Arnold Schwarzenegger .
Big body, big action, big entertainment! Ghajini: Boy next door to pure muscle. Aamir never fails to surprise.
Built a body of dreams! Just to see him shirtless I would see Ghajini, and no, I have no such tendencies!

(less)Bollywood wakes up to women-centric themes
Women have played several roles on screen - helpless mother, submissive wife, devoted girlfriend and ignored sister. But over a decade, filmmakers like Sanjay Leela Bhansali , Shyam Benegal, Vishal Bhardwaj have tried to break the stereotype and present them in a more realistic way, and successfully too.
IANS lists women-centric films in the past decade that have ruled the box-office or garnered critical acclaim: "The Dirty Picture" (2011) - Vidya Balan's itsy bitsy clothes, cleavage-showing blouses and raunchy dance numbers swept the audience off their feet even before the film hit the silver screen, but her powerful and crisp dialogue delivery and easy portrayal of the character took the attention away. The film is an unofficial biopic of southern sex symbol Silk Smitha, her rise to fame and downfall.
"7 Khoon Maaf" (2011) - Priyanka Chopra won critical acclaim for her performance as Susanna, a potentially loathsome serial spouse-killer. At the outset Priyanka's character seemed negative but at the same time it gave an insight into a woman's heart and soul.
Rather than hate her, many ended up sympathising with her. "No One Killed Jessica" (2011) - Based on the real-life murder of model Jessica Lall in 1999, this film kickstarted the year on a positive note.
While Vidya Balan triumphed with her non-glamorous and distraught portrayal of Jessica's sister Sabrina, Rani Mukerji's unprecedented use of abuses as a journalist raised quite a few eyebrows but brought critical acclaim for her. "Fashion" (2008) - Directed by Madhur Bhandarkar , "Fashion" gave a sneak peak into the dark reality of the glamour world.
Priyanka stole the show with her powerful and intense performance as a girl who goes from aspiring model to supermodel before her descent. The actress played a bubbly girl, who connected with the darkest of human emotions while pursuing her dream.
Her performance also won her a national award. "Dor" (2006) - A Nagesh Kuknoor film, "Dor" was the poigant tale of two women and how their fate brings them together.
Relatively new to the world of cinema, both Ayesha Takia and Gul Panag proved their mettle as actors with their distinctive performances. "Black" (2005) - Directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, "Black" was one of the best films of Rani Mukerji's career.
Her portrayal of a deaf and blind girl and how she forms a strong bond with her teacher played by Amitabh Bachchan won her accolades from all over the world. The film brought out the untapped potential of the actress.
"Chameli" (2003) - "Chameli" was a brave attempt by Kareena Kapoor , where she played a sex worker. With her over-the-top makeup, bright coloured saris and intense portrayal, Kareena proved that she is much more than just glamorous.
"Zubeidaa" (2001) - A Shyam Benegal film, "Zubeidaa" starred Karisma Kapoor and Rekha in prominent roles. It was the story of a girl who gets married into a royal family and frets about the restrictions on her as princess and often vents her frustrations at not having her husband to herself.
The film saw Karisma in a completely different avatar. "Lajja" (2001) - Directed by Rajkumar Santoshi, "Lajja" satirized the status of women in society and the restrictions on them.
The film chronicled the story of four women with the names Maithali, Janaki, Ramdulhari and Vaidehi that are considered to be the versions of Sita. The film starred Manisha Koirala , Rekha, Madhuri Dixit and Mahima Chaudhry.
"Chandni Bar" (2001)- Madhur Bhandarkar's "Chandni Bar" was again the heartwarming story of a sex worker played by Tabu and how she struggles to provide a better lifestyle to her kids, keeping them away from the gritty world of prostitution. Tabu walked away with the national award for best actress

"Were we serious? It was so violent we had to be, but it was so violent how could we be? "I love the violence. It's fascinating how primal it is.
We didn't really concern ourselves with its authenticity. It was more of a symbol of my character's emotional landscape.

(less)The wedding retrospective
. RAVEENA TANDON AND ANIL THADANI WHEN: February 2004 LOVE-O-METRE: Nearing the 10-year milestone.
THE PROPOSAL: The couple met for the first time on Valentine's Day at Olive restaurant in Mumbai. After that, however, they did not see each other for two years! Then Raveena made her first film, "Stumped" as producer, and Anil sent her an SMS that he would like to help her distribute the film.
"We actually dated for only two months," shares Raveena. "We met in August 2002, and he proposed in October.
That year, like this year, Diwali and my birthday were on the same day! So he planned a proposal on Diwali day. We first went to his chacha's house to celebrate, and then headed to my family's Diwali puja.
When I reached my dad's house, I saw huge ornate baskets, lots of them lying around the house, and my mom just dismissed them saying, 'Your brothers want to send this to their colleagues and friends.' We started getting ready for the Lakshmi puja, but we were just waiting! And I kept asking, 'Why are we delaying things, it's nine o' clock.
..
lets start! And it was the first time my two adopted daughters, Pooja and Chhaya were standing around with their cameras. Usually I would film or take photographs of the celebrations! Suddenly the doorbell rang and I saw Anil's mom, dad and sister walk in.
It still didn't strike me, but I said, 'So mom, we were waiting for them?' And then my dad asked Anil to do the honours! Everybody was giggling as Anil got on his knees and pulled out a big box with a ring and asked, 'Will you be my wife?' It took me a long time to respond, I saw my mom all teary-eyed, and my daughters were both laughing and crying..
. and everybody said, 'Please say yes, he will get tired being on his knees!' So I said 'Sure!'" WEDDING TRIVIA: Manav Gangwani designed Raveena's bridal wear.
He also designed three exclusive outfits for the groom. The bride's wardrobe was 10 times more elaborate than the groom's.
Raveena got a dream wedding going, after scouting for the best possible locations with Anil. Her sangeet and mehndi parties were held on separate evenings at the Shiv Niwas Palace hotel in Udaipur.
Her wedding reception was held at the Jag Mandir Palace hotel, on Pichola Lake, Udaipur. Farah Khan Ali designed Raveena's jewellery.
Guests included the who's who of Bollywood, and a diverse range of the couple's friends like Gautam Singhania, Manish Malhotra, Vijay Mallya, Ravi and Ritu Shastri, Amar Singh, Vasundhara Raje and Subrata Roy Sahara. HRITHIK ROSHAN AND SUSSANNE KHAN WHEN: December 2000 LOVE-O-METRE: They celebrated a decade together in 2010 and have two delightful little boys, Hridhaan and Hrehaan.
THE PROPOSAL: One year after he started dating Sussanne on Valentine's Day, in 1999, Hrithik went down on his knees and proposed to her at Juhu beach in Mumbai. "I'd known since I was 12 that she was the girl for me, but that was the big moment, complete with a ring.
Earlier, on another Valentine's Day, I'd told her those three all-important words, 'I love you,'" Hrithik has been quoted saying. WEDDING TRIVIA: In a confluence of Hindu-Muslim rituals and cultures, Hrithik performed certain Hindu rites and Sussanne, Sanjay Khan's youngest daughter, performed certain Muslim rites.
The mehndi and sangeet were homespun affairs, mostly at home with close friends and family. But the wedding was a spectacular affair.
The ceremony took place at Sanjay Khan's heavilyguarded Golden Palms resorts and spa, on Bangalore's outskirts in December 2000. In a brief appearance before the media in the midst of the pre-wedding haldi ritual, Hrithik said with a laugh, "There will be no heartburn.
They are my well-wishers. They will continue to wish me luck and success," he said, referring to his choice of bride vis-avis his family's response.
"Sussanne is our last daughter and I'm very happy that she's getting married," said Feroz Khan. About 70 members of the Khan and Roshan families and their friends attended the wedding.
Guests at the reception included stars like Dimple Kapadia, Rishi and Randhir Kapoor, Uday Chopra, Karan Johar and childhood friend Abhishek Bachchan. Hrithik's mode of transport to his wedding was a white horse.
His wedding oufit was a white Jodhpuri suit with gold-embroidery designed by Rocky S, while Sussanne wore a gold and red ensemble designed by Tarun Tahiliani. ABHISHEK BACHCHAN AND AISHWARYA RAI WHEN: April 2007 LOVE-O-METRE: They have reached the half-decade mark this year and are parents to the new-born angel! THE PROPOSAL: This classy couple surprised everyone with their engagement announcement back in 2007.
Although Abhi and Ash were very hush-hush about the love brewing between them, it seemed inevitable as fate repeatedly cast them together in a slew of magnum opus projects such as "Umrao Jaan", "Dhoom 2", and what seemed a turning point, "Guru". Aishwarya becoming a part of the Bachchan parivaar started looking more imminent when she did an electrifying stage performance of Kajra Re at the 2005 IIFA Awards with senior and junior Bachchan.
Abhishek popped the question with a borrowed ring in hand (allegedly from the production department of his film), proposing to Ash spontaneously as they were heading home after the premiere of "Guru" in Toronto, waiting for their flight at the British Airways lounge at New York's JFK airport on January 12, 2007. According to eyewitnesses, a very emotional Ash accepted.
After Abhishek called home with the good news, the couple was asked to come and they had a formal engagement ceremony at Jalsa, attended only by close family friends like Amar Singh, Anil and Tina Ambani, Kirron Kher and the Johars. Finally, the couple was unafraid to hang out at each other's sets and make public appearances together.
WEDDING TRIVIA: The actual wedding became a homely, though celebrity-studded affair mostly set around the Bachchan residences, Jalsa and Pratiksha, as Teji Bachchan, Amitabh's mother, was critical. However, many details about the nuptials were unique: the wedding invite had two 'editions' - one invite only solicited blessings, while the second set actually invited a limited number of guests.
While the Bachchans sent out golden chocolate boxes with the cards, they also sent ensembles by Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla to close friends. The Rais also sent out jewellery and clothes to select invitees, including close friend Subrata Roy Sahara.
Celebrations kicked off at Pratiksha with the sangeet, where it is believed a lot of family members danced to Bollywood songs, with Karan Johar playing MC. The mehndi was held at La Mer, Ash's residence.
Fifteen kilos of special Nihar henna was brought in by Shweta Nanda, Sonali Bendre, Rinkie Khanna and other close friends for Ash from Sojat in Rajasthan. A 30-foot walkway was erected at the entrance of La Mer to the main area of the ceremony.
The actual wedding saw 11 pundits from Benaras and Bangalore, and it was conducted in Arya Samaj tradition. Chanting started in the morning, and massive tents were put up to accommodate guests around Pratiksha.
The ceremony was conducted in an air-conditioned pandal in the same garden. At 5.
15 pm the colourfully-dressed dhol players kicked off the baraat from Jalsa, which ended at Pratiksha, where a bejewelled Aishwarya in a gold kanjeevaram ensemble waited for her groom. The ceremony was over by 7.
30 pm and then the friends danced the night away. KARISMA KAPOOR AND SUNJAY KAPUR WHEN: September 2003 LOVE-O-METRE: " He's (Sunjay) not the film-going sort.
I think Sunjay has made me a calmer person; if you ask me that's the one thing that has changed about me after marriage," said Karisma a year after her wedding. The couple completes a decade in 2013.
WEDDING TRIVIA: Bollywood's blueeyed girl Karisma Kapoor tied the knot with Sunjay Kapur in a ceremony marked by style and grandeur. The wedding ceremony, which was to take place at 11 am, was delayed because the groom was stuck in traffic.
Sunjay arrived at the venue at 12.45 pm and rushed inside the cottage's gates.
He was dressed in a cream sherwani and wore a gold sehra. The pheras finally took place at 1.
00 am in the presence of both families. In typical Kapoor tradition, Karisma was married at her grandfather, the late Raj Kapoor's home, R K Cottage.
The couple opted for an hour-long Sikh ceremony. At around noon, Karisma's family and friends were still busy with pre-wedding ceremonies.
Both the bride's sister Kareena and her aunt Rima Jain supervised last-minute preparations. The strains of the shehnai wafted through the air.
Outside the cottage, the scene was both crowded and confused. Curious onlookers were milling around, hoping to catch a glimpse of their favourite stars.
Journalists, photographers and camera crews had stationed themselves outside the gates of the cottage. A phalanx of policemen was doing their best to manage the crowds and the ensuing traffic jam.
Because of the crowds, no member of the RK family was present at the gates to welcome the groom and his family. Among the guests who drove in were Lolo's uncle Rishi Kapoor, actor Sanjay Kapoor who reportedly played the brother's part at the ceremony, designer Manish Malhotra, granduncles Shashi and Shammi Kapoor, filmmaker Bharat Shah, cricketer Mohammed Azharuddin and Sangeeta Bijlani, Govinda, Rahul and Akshay Khanna.
Manish Malhotra had designed Karisma's trousseau. Being a style icon herself, it wasn't a surprise when she chose to follow the unconventional route and opted for a pastel shade for her bridal outfit instead of the usual reds and maroons.
The tasselled dupatta was embellished with zari and stones. The house was decorated with flowers and the garden that surrounded the house was turned into a Sheesh Mahal-like mandap that could accommodate 600 guests who were offered non-alcoholic drinks and vegetarian starters until the wedding ceremony was completed.
Karisma's father Randhir, according to reports, opened a bottle of champagne after the wedding, after which a wellstocked bar was thrown open to the guests. An elaborate lunch was served later which included a variety of cuisines like Oriental, Thai, Chinese, Italian, French and Continental.
It also included Punjabi, Gujarati and Rajasthani food

(less)Success isn't everything: Naomi Watts
"Acting is such an uncertain kind of life. You struggle so much at the beginning of your career - at least I did - and then you suddenly find yourself working all the time and after six or seven years you realise that maybe work and success isn't everything," she said.
Watts, who was recently seen in Clint Eastwood's J Edgar opposite Leonardo DiCaprio as the FBI director's loyal secretary, Helen Gandy, said it was challenging for her because it required extensive time in make-up. "I think with Helen, we wanted to make her look elegant, so we were trying to go carefully.
The process of the endless hours, sitting in a make-up chair is hard and I'm quite an anxious, fidgety person anyway, so I don't really like people touching me for too long," she added. Tweet

I had a handful of friends who were my partners in crime for fun and work. My friends and I worked for some extra money so that we could be more indulgent.
I did odd jobs like selling oil or doing a survey at petrol pumps. We'd make ` 100 a day.
Coming from a middle class family, I had a nominal pocket money - ` 300 a month. The extra money was used to take care of our so called 'lavish fun'.
While movies occupied most of our free time, we also enjoyed lunching outside, and sometimes even having beer in the afternoon! Afternoon discos, and hanging out at Vaishali, a famous place on Pune's FC Road was another passtime. Sometimes we'd get hold of studious kids to gain entry into the british library, where we'd chill for hours.

Another pastime was puncturing bikes and car tyres. However, there was one class I never bunked.

And though I found it to be difficult, I assumed it was because I hadn't studied. After the exam, when my friends and I started discussing the paper, to my horror I realised that I solved the wrong paper for my final exam.

(less)Scientists say film Contagion is for real
Audiences have gasped in horror at what happens to Gwyneth Paltrow. Before it was out, the movie made real-life disease investigators anxious, too, though for a different reason: They were worried the filmmakers would take so many artistic liberties with the science that the result would be an incredible movie that was not credible.
Well, cue the applause. "It's very plausible," said Dr.
Thomas Frieden, head of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which would investigate such an outbreak. A new virus jumping from animals to humans? Nothing fictional about that.
Global spread of a disease in a few days? In this age of jet travel, absolutely. A societal meltdown if things get bad? Plan on it.
Yikes. The only bit of relief here is that several experts think the odds are pretty long that a new virus could be both so deadly and contagious at the same time.
The team behind the film used several expert consultants and went to other lengths to get scientific details correct. That included working with esteemed Columbia University epidemiologist Dr.
W. Ian Lipkin to create the fictional MEV-1 virus.
It's modeled on the Nipah virus - a dangerous bug first seen in Malaysia a dozen years ago that spread from pigs to farmers. Efforts also involved actress Kate Winslet sitting down with a female CDC disease investigator so she could correctly copy such things as the investigators clothes, mannerisms and even how the scientist might wear her hair on a field assignment.
Overall health officials say they were very pleased with what resulted. During an advance screening for CDC employees in Atlanta last week, some in the audience laughed appreciatively to see visual details and even lingo that they never imagined would be used in a mass-market motion picture.
"It was very accurate. It kind of made us all chuckle because there were things that we thought only people at CDC might get," said Laura Gieraltowski, an expert in foodborne illnesses.
Indeed, CDC officials have embraced the film. The agency allowed the movie's makers to film at their main campus - the first time the agency has allowed a major motion picture studio such access.
And CDC officials have opened up their schedules for media interviews, panel appearances and live Internet chats to talk about the movie and potential real-life contagions. It's a far better reception than their reaction to Outbreak , a popular 1995 movie starring Dustin Hoffman, the last time Hollywood took a major stab at telling a story about a nation-threatening, non-zombie epidemic.
Like Contagion , that film had a respected director and an all-star cast, but the scientific miscues were laughable. Some experts still shake their heads at how much time was spent finding an infected monkey and how little time it took - seemingly just a few minutes - to make, test and distribute a life-saving vaccine.
Contagion fares far better in the experts' eyes. That said, the scenario painted in the new movie is also considered highly unlikely.
A thriller telling a complex story in roughly two hours, it portrays some things that are doubtful at best. Among them: - The government dispatches only one disease investigator to Minnesota to check out the outbreak.
In reality, the government would throw a lot more people at an emerging problem like this. When the first two swine flu cases were reported in San Diego in 2009, neither of them fatalities, the CDC sent five such scientists along with other staff.
- The fictional virus kills more than 1 in 5 of the people it infects. That's extremely high for an epidemic that goes global.
The infamous Spanish flu pandemic of 1918-19 - used as the modern-day measuring stick for a terrible international contagion - killed more like 1 in 100. Something this deadly and fast-moving has never materialized, possibly because a bug that kills too efficiently limits its ability to spread because its victims don't have much time to make contact with many other people.
- When a vaccine is released to the public, distribution of initially limited supplies was decided through a lottery based on date of birth. In reality, health officials would prioritize vaccine for people who were deemed most susceptible to the virus.
Also at the head of the line would be health-care workers and others essential to keeping emergency response systems running. The movie didn't indicate measures like that.
- As a vaccine to protect against the new disease is being developed, the movie seems to suggest that initial human testing of it hinges largely on a CDC scientist injecting herself and then visiting her diseased father's bedside to see if she gets sick. Officials say a more realistic portrayal would show weeks or months of safety and effectiveness testing in many thousands of volunteers.
Also, "we don't inject ourselves with (experimental) vaccines," said Dr. Ermias Belay, a CDC official who oversees lab scientists handling dangerous pathogens.
Lipkin was involved with the movie for years and even reviewed film clips during production. When an Associated Press reporter reviewed the list of unrealistic points with him, he responded; "It's a movie.
" But he also chafed at the idea that this kind of global epidemic won't occur just because we haven't seen one before. "Nobody expected Nipah.
Nobody expected HIV. Nobody expected SARS," he said.
One other significant plot point seems pretty implausible, too - how well the epidemic investigation goes. When new infections start popping up in multiple cities at about the same time, finding the origin can be a nearly impossible task.
Yet the movie's disease detectives zero in on the "index case" very quickly. "In a real-world investigation, that would be a lucky guess," said Dr.
Douglas Hamilton, who heads the CDC's Epidemic Intelligence Service. In their discussions about the movie this week, some CDC officials are making a point of noting that recent budget cuts are threatening their ability and that of state and local health departments to respond as well as the movie portrays.
Just one CDC investigator assigned to the scene of a major outbreak? "Maybe this reflects the future," said Dr. Ali Khan, the agency's director of emergency preparedness.

(less)Mallika Sherawat receives a smashing welcome
In the wee hours of Friday morning, the actress walked out of the international airport, only to be greeted by the sight of a Merc sent to pick her up, but its windshield seemingly smashed. An eyewitness at the airport told Mirror, "With photographers and camera crew falling all over each other to capture her reaction, she was only too happy to pose.
" The 'surprise' apparently was masterminded by Vivek Oberoi who was waiting quietly inside the car and in true filmy style emerged from the sun roof of the car with a bouquet of flowers and said, "Welcome to KLPD (Kismat Love Paisa Dilli)." As if on cue, producer Amit Chandrra and director Sanjay Khanduri, emerged as well and conjured a cake and crackers to complete the party.
Incidentally, 20 minutes before Mallika had stepped out to the unusual welcome, Priyanka Chopra , who was flying back from Dubai , had walked out of the same gate. The eye-witness adds, "Priyanka looked as though she was not expecting such a supercharged media contingent at the spot.
She gave a few cursory photo opportunities to the paparazzi and rushed out." A paparazzo informed Mirror, "Whenever Priyanka arrives at the airport her manager always gives us a heads up on her arrival time.
We knew Mallika was scheduled to arrive, but were surprised to see Priyanka walk out instead." The manager, it is believed, knew about the reception awaiting Mallika and wanted his client to be spared the awkwardness.
Mallika was heard saying in crisp Haryanvi, "Gaadi dekh ke mane gana shock lage," or I was shocked to see the car. Well, so were we
(less)Rascals: Movie Review
Sadly, in the subsequent decade, all he served in the name of stress-free slapsticks is noise and commotion. While we aren't demanding that the filmmaker upgrade with times, all we expect is that the one-time king of comedy merely maintain his original brand of humour.
Is that asking for too much? Rascals is what one can call a 'vacation' filmmaking stint where everyone works on the film as if they were on a 'holiday' and the audience is expected to 'leave' their senses behind. The actors make least efforts to add conviction to their performances and the patchy writing just allows them to play as they please.
Invariably the director tries to camouflage the shallowness in the story by adding depth only in the decibel levels of the dialogue delivery. So you have conmen Chetan (Sanjay Dutt) and Bhagat (Ajay Devgn) in one-upmanship game to win the girl (Kangana Ranaut) loaded with assets (both financial and physical).
It's never clear what they love more - her body or her bank-balance. And their lecherous rivalry only seems to be about who would get to hug the cleavage-popping girl more number of times.
One-upmanship has been a popular plot for several comedies since the times of Amitabh Bachchan - Shashi Kapoor's Do Aur Do Paanch (1980). Even David Dhawan had smartly handled the concept in his earlier comedies like Govinda-Anil Kapoor's Deewana Mastana (1997) and Akshay-Salman's Mujhse Shaadi Karogi (2004).
Unfortunately it doesn't quite work this time, primarily because Kangana Ranaut doesn't share any chemistry with either men and so their persistent pursuit to get the girl falls flat. Also thanks to the dull camaraderie, the viewer never really bothers which hero would actually win the heroine in the end.
Thereby the small surprise in the climax (no, there isn't a cameo by a third hero) also doesn't register much. The storytelling in the animated title credits is more appealing than the conventional narrative structure.
While one has already left logic behind, the problem is that Yunus Sejawal's screenplay is inconsistent, convenient and uneventful. It lacks the imagination or wit for some real exciting clash between the male leads.
One can easily see through most of the worn-out gags. Sanjay Chhel's synchronized rhyming dialogues are occasionally funny but seem forced otherwise.
You laugh more on the corniness of the scenes than the comedy per se. The tone of humour is consistently loud and commotional.
Expectedly Ajay Devgn keeps screaming most of the time and hams outrageously. Sanjay Dutt is better in comparison, which isn't saying much.
He gets the funnier lines, gags and scenes. Kangana Ranaut is ill at ease in comedy.
She struggles to hold her own and emerges as a bimbo in her act. Lisa Haydon is merely employed to look hot and she does a fair job at it.
Hiten Paintel is used as an add-on and his presence in the film is immaterial. Satish Kaushik attempts to induce few laughs with his gibberish brand comedy.
Bharti Achrekar gets no scope. Chunky Pandey overacts.
Arjun Rampal has pretty much nothing to do. Rascals ends up being a silly and stupid comedy!

(less)An eve with Shammi Kapoor
Your diarist recalls one such summer evening at Worli a little over a year ago, a rare one graced by Shammi, his wife Neela and son Aditya, besides Rishi and Randhir Kapoor . It was the birthday party of an old family friend of the Kapoors, Subhash Sanas.
Shammi drove down in his custom built car, and was easily coaxed into singing for the gathering. He started with 'Oh mere sona re sona re' and followed up with 'Gore gore chand se mukh par kaali kaali ankhen hain'.
The infectious mood transported even the usually dour Chhagan Bhujbal into dreamy nostalgia - he launched into 'Tum bin jeevan kaise beeta poocho mere dil se'. But the highlight of the evening was Shammi singing a haunting number from his film Pagla Kahin Ka - 'Tum mujhe yun bhula na paoge'.

(less)Will Kate Hudson shoot in India?
Having completed filming in Atlanta and New York, Mira is expected to being shooting in Delhi sometime very soon. Nair's movie narrates the story of a young Pakistani (played by Riz) working on Wall Street whose life drastically changes following the 9/11 attacks, when he leaves behind his adopted country and the American woman (played by Kate Hudson ) he had fallen for.
Filming began in the end of September. Days later, Nair mentioned on a microblogging site "Kate Hudson and @rizmc - kya chemistry hai!".
By October 14, filming of the US portions was over. Meanwhile, photos of the Hollywood star shooting in New York or spending time with son Ryder and fiance Matthew Bellamy have grabbed attention.
Her new hair colour (or wig?) as well as how trim she looks just three months after the birth of her son (Bingham Hawn Billamy) with Matthew have also become a talking point. While the debate over whether Kate looks better as blonde or brunette continues, there is also speculation over whether Kate and Liev (Naomi Watts' partner) will be flying down to Delhi, where a Pakistani setting will be recreated.
Riz, who had earlier filmed for Michael Winterbottom's "Trishna" with Frieda Pinto in Rajasthan, will be coming down to Delhi soon though he didn't divulge the filming dates in this country when CT got in touch with him. What he did say, however, was that he would be performing in a gig in Pune in November.
Said Riz, who is as passionate about music as he is about acting, "I am playing in Pune on November 20." The cast includes Shabana Azmi , Om Puri and Adil Hussain (of "Life of Pi" fame).
Industry sources said that Adil, who is now in New York to film "English Vinglish" with Sridevi , is expected to return to India on November 10. The actor will be playing the character of Mustafa and will begin filming his portions in Delhi from November 21.
Another interesting Indian connection for the film is that "Chak De! India" director Shimit Amin will be editing the movie
(less)'Delhi became Lahore ’coz of safety concerns in Pakistan'
He surprised us by saying that contrary to what's been reported, the film was not shot in Lahore (where the story is based) and was recreated in Delhi, not because the crew didn't get permission, but because there were concerns with the crew's safety in Pakistan. Was it clear from the beginning that Lahore would be recreated in Delhi, as the team couldn't get permissions to shoot in Lahore? I don't think there were any permission issues.
Because it's an international film with an international cast, films like these have an insurance bond, and it was impossible to get that kind of insurance bond to take these stars to Lahore. There were concerns about their safety there.
Mira met me twice in Lahore in the last two years, and she spent a couple of weeks there, discovering what all she wanted to shoot and where. And then, the governor of Pakistan's Punjab province, Salman Taseer, was assassinated.
He was a family friend and had promised to support us, but after his death, the whole atmosphere changed. No one felt sure about taking the production to Lahore.
The government was not the problem. How much is Lahore a part of it now? Very much.
Mira has come to Lahore looking for music, Pakistani fashion..
. we went to meet contemporary Lahori artistes.
Even on the sets in Delhi, she'd often ask, "Is this guy looking like a chhalli (bhutta) wala in Lahore?" She's very keen to infuse Pakistan and Lahore in the film. How much are you involved in the making of the film? People often overestimate how much control a novelist has, and it can be very painful and frightening for a novelist to have control over a project like this.
So, early on only, I decided to just stay apart and enjoy the project. I'm like a father and the novel is like my child, who I've handed over to the boarding school.
I can now only sit back and hope that the school is good to my child and he/she grows up to be happy. When did you first give over the rights? I was approached by a few directors immediately after the novel was printed.
Mira was in London , and she took me and my wife out for lunch. Obviously, since "Salaam Bombay", I was aware of her work and I thought she was an enormously talented filmmaker.
I felt a great degree of comfort in handing over the project. I have not regretted that.
She has been very inclusive of me..
. I'd thought that the best thing to do and the easiest emotionally, was to not see it being made.
But that was probably not meant to be. Two years ago, Mira came and said that she was finding it difficult to get a screenwriter to adapt this.
She said those who get the desi context don't get the New York corporate bit, and vice versa. She asked me to draft a first copy of the screenplay.
Was this your first time in Delhi? I've been to India several times. But this is the first time that I spent several weeks in Delhi.
We went exploring the cafes, nightlife, restaurants, etc in Delhi, and it has become a much more international and interesting city in the last several years. Through Mira and the film, and the locations, I got to see places like the Delhi University campus, the Anglo Arabic school at Ajmeri Gate, Ritz Cinema in Kashmere Gate, the Old Delhi Railway Station - I got to soak up a bit of the older parts of Delhi that I wouldn't have done otherwise.
Also, these three weeks were extra special because my family was also here. My wife Zara, my parents, my daughter, my wife's parents, my sister-in-law, too.
..
there were 11 of us here, and we rented a flat. It was the first time in Delhi for a lot of them and I think they left thinking that we are only a 45-minute flight away from Lahore, yet it feels like you're travelling to another planet

(less)Censor snips gory 'Ghost' scenes, director cries foul
Singh|ghost SHARE AND DISCUSSTweet Ghost The on-release Shiney Ahuja starrer "Ghost" has received full censorial treatment - its excessive gore-content prompted the board to make severe cuts. Director Puja Jatinder Bedi says that some of the cuts have been unjustified.
"The censor board cut one of the most important scenes in my film. It's a scene where the ghost gets crucified like Jesus Christ.
The scene was very pivotal for the screenplay," said Bedi. "The censor board felt that the crucifixion would hurt religious sentiments of the Christian community.
Also, the brutality was being perpetrated on a woman. The blood and gore content is high enough for 'Ghost' to be rated as the most violent film ever.
So, the censors have toned down all the murder sequences," she added. However, when contacted, J.
P. Singh, the censor board's regional officer at Mumbai, said that the crucifixion sequence had only been reduced, not removed.
"That scene is still there in the film. Only its length has been shortened to reduce the impact of the extreme brutality shown on a girl.
The examining committee has given five-six cuts. All of them were extremely brutal.
There was a scene showing a dead body's legs being cut. Another excessively violent scene showed a girl being beaten for a very long time by many people," said Singh

I would be grateful to him for giving me a new life after such a difficult time. He kept advising me like a father and told me to be strong.
"He used to say, 'Bad times are part and parcel of life and you should forget everything and move on'," said Shiney. Known for his performances in "Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi" and "Gangster - A Love Story", Shiney's movie career hit a rough patch when he was convicted by a Mumbai fast track court for raping his domestic help two years ago.
The actor has challenged the sentence in the Bombay High Court and is currently out on bail. About his role in Ghost , Shiney said: "In the film, I play detective Vijay Singh, who is called to investigate a mysterious murder in a hospital.
As his investigation progresses, he realises that this is not a normal murder, there is something else to it and hence the quest starts to find the truth." Shiney was last seen in 2008 film Hijack with Esha Deol, which was a dud.

(less)Raveena Tandon goes for a makeover
"I have have completed five days of shooting in Mumbai and have shot two songs of the movie. I wrote the story about a woman and three generations of men.
The story is spread across seven days. The resemblance to Shobhaa De begins and ends with the fact that my lead character is a fiesty author who writes pulp fiction.
I show three phases in her life. She is a girl who was brought up in an orphanage.
The superintendent of the orphanage was Lillete Dubey who was her surrogate mother figure. Anupam Kher plays a character who owns a publishing house.
In real life, David Davidhar was an employee of a publishing house. A similarity in the surname can't be reason enough to draw comparisons," Sudipto says.
In the film, Raveena falls in love with Rohit's character when she was a journalist in a girlie magazine. "Rohit Roy's character has also been misrepresented in the media.
He plays a suave and charming fashion photographer. He isn't a bad-hopper.
He wanted Raveena to go for an image makeover. She became more fashion conscious but was also traditionally Indian," the director says.
An emotional incident causes the two to drift apart. "That's when Raveena goes through a drastic change in her life to meet a as aspiring actor from a small town.
This character is played by Amit Purohit. To prove a point to Rohit that she is still a very attractive woman, she goes for a makeover.
Her lifestyle changes drastically when she becomes celebrity author. Raveena is now preparing to shoot some sensual and romantic love scenes with Amit.
But the scenes are not sleazy. The film is fraught with tragic nuances.
My movie is about a woman finding liberation." However, none of the characters in the film are negative.
"There is nobody bad in my film. Everybody is a creature of circumstances," he signs off
(less)Kareena Kapoor tops sexiest Asian woman list
Kareena, who recently gave hits like Bodyguard and RA.One , won by one per cent of votes, the narrowest ever margin and beat off tough competition from some of the most stunning women from around the world.
Katrina, who had won the title for the last three years by a large margin, slipped into second place. Eastern Eye showbiz editor Asjad Nazir said, "This battle between the two beauties is a sign of things to come in Bollywood in the next few years.
Although the list contained pop stars, TV personalities, models and film stars from around the world, the voting quite comprehensively showed that Kareena and Katrina have put a distance between themselves and the rest of the contenders in terms of popularity." Hrithik Roshan's wife Sussanne received a massive number of votes and was one of the highest new entries at number 16.
Other notable stars in the list included Priyanka Chopra (3), and Bipasha Basu (4), who both slipped down one place each. Freida Pinto came 5th, followed by Deepika Padukone (7).
New entries included Jacqueline Fernandez (12), Nargis Fakhri (23) and Sonakshi Sinha (38). Aishwarya Rai Bachchan came 6th and Sonam Kapoor 9th.

(less)Top 10 Most Disappointing Hindi Films of 2011
They might not essentially be flops but turned low on the immense expectations that they came with. As we reach the yearend starts the predictable countdown to the best of the year.
While most award functions will go on to honour the good works of 2011, we go a step ahead to list down some of the most disappointing films of the year. They might not essentially be flops but turned low on the immense expectations and promise that they came with.
Here's the Top 10 list..
. 1.
) Aarakshan Director: Prakash Jha Cast: Amitabh Bachchan , Manoj Bajpayee, Saif Ali Khan , Deepika Padukone , Prateik Babbar With Prakash Jha's past repertoire one may reserve the right to believe that his films are social, sensible, well-researched, hard-hitting and conveys a message. But he proved us wrong with Aarakshan .
This film touched its core theme of educational reservations only partially and peripherally. Jha played safe by barely emphasizing anything about reservations beyond what is common knowledge.
The issue and its implications were seen through the confines of the viewpoint of its principal protagonist (Amitabh Bachchan) and the narrative lacked any broader perspective on the national issue. Not only does the film fail to offer any solution to the issue, it doesn't even illuminate interlinked concerns like the debate over the extent of reservations or the aftermath of compromise on merit.
Moreover the narrative very conveniently overlooks one of the most potent and prevalent hidden-agenda behind the quota system - the vote-bank politics of government. The film reeked of idealism and yet attempted to tackle a practical issue! 2.
) Dhobi Ghat Director: Kiran Rao Cast: Prateik, Monica Dogra , Aamir Khan , Kriti Malhotra What would you call a film whose central characters comprise of an aspiring actor, a photographer, a painter and a videographer? 'Art' cinema! Well jokes apart and with due respect to arthouse cinema, which can be an enriching and exquisite experience, Kiran Rao's directorial debut seems like a pretentious attempt to adapt to the prerequisites of the offbeat genre. Minimalism, as a tool, is effective when it adds merit to the medium.
But here it only leads to nothingness in the narrative. Dhobi Ghat is the kind of cinema where you expect the end-credits to appear after any random scene in the concluding reels.
The long pauses, slow pacing, extended shot-taking, erratic editing and a murky look at Mumbai clearly work towards giving the film its intended artistic aura. However the story lacks the depth that could have added more meaning to this tangential look at the town.
Blame it to the weak chemistry of the characters or the premature culmination of the plot but the melancholy of the characters fails to move you beyond a point. Mumbai is predictably captured by means of ordinary people like housemaid, vegetable vendor, fisherwoman, street rat-killers to the laundryman ( dhobi ) - like how it is regularly portrayed to the international audience in its underprivileged glory.
Unfortunately the depiction of Mumbai as an additional character in the film doesn't add any new dimension to the narrative. All it does is give a new Indian ambassador to the world - so after dabbawala , it's now the dhobi .
Is that what you mean by world cinema? 3.) Game Director: Abhinay Deo Cast: Abhishek Bachchan, Kangana Ranaut, Sarah Jane Dias, Boman Irani Coming from ever-bankable Farhan Akhtar and Delhi Belly director Abhinay Deo, Game was surprisingly a weak attempt.
It only played with our sensibilities. The narrative of Game was as much inconsistent as the continuously changing geography of the plot that kept shifting from Thailand , Istanbul , India, UK to Greece.
Under the guise of an espionage thriller and a slick murder mystery, Game ended up being a formula flick driven by ancient cliched conflicts like badle-ki-aag and jaydaad-ki-ladaai . It was too convoluted, cliched, convenient and coincidental for a suspense thriller.
Surprisingly Farhan Akhtar's dialogues only added to the corniness. The direction was mediocre and storytelling blemished with too many loose ends.
Abhishek Bachchan tried too hard to be cool but he needs to 'get idea' of good scripts. 4.
) Mausam Director: Pankaj Kapur Cast: Shahid Kapoor , Sonam Kapoor What you expect to be a timeless love story turns to be an endless episode in Pankaj Kapur's Mausam . Kapur uses actual unfortunate events from communal riots to terrorist attacks as the backdrop to symbolize changing seasons of love in his coming of age love story.
And the sluggish story makes an attempt to push itself 'only' during these adversities. So disillusioned are you after a point that you hopelessly pray for another catastrophe to strike and thereby end your turmoil.
Sonam Kapoor appears too juvenile for the role and lacks the maturity and range to handle a character which spans a decade and demands diverse emotions. The entire basis of this ill-fated love story heavily depends on the chemistry between Sonam and Shahid but it certainly wasn't of the kind that one could rave about.
And with their mediocre rapport, you don't feel as much for the love birds as one should ideally have. Marred by its unrelenting length, what Mausam serves in its three-hour runtime is so shallow and stretched that you yearn for the onset of the next season.
5.) Rascals Director: David Dhawan Cast: Sanjay Dutt, Ajay Devgn, Kangana Ranaut Rascals is what one can call a 'vacation' filmmaking stint where everyone works on the film as if they were on a 'holiday' and the audience is expected to 'leave' their senses behind.
The actors make least efforts to add conviction to their performances and the patchy writing just allows them to play as they please. Invariably the director tries to camouflage the shallowness in the story by adding depth only in the decibel levels of the dialogue delivery.
The one-upmanship between Sanjay Dutt and Ajay Devgn doesn't work primarily because Kangana Ranaut doesn't share any chemistry with either men and so their persistent pursuit to get the girl falls flat. Also thanks to the dull camaraderie, the viewer never really bothers which hero would actually win the heroine in the end.
The humour lacks imagination or wit and one can easily see through most of the worn-out gags. You laugh more on the corniness of the scenes than the comedy per se.
The tone of humour is consistently loud and commotional. Ajay Devgn keeps screaming most of the time and hams outrageously.
Sanjay Dutt doesn't seem interested. Kangana Ranaut is ill at ease in comedy.
She struggles to hold her own and emerges as a bimbo in her act. Rascals ended up being a silly and stupid comedy! 6.
) Thank You Director: Anees Bazmee Cast: Akshay Kumar, Sonam Kapoor, Bobby Deol, Irrfan Khan, Suniel Shetty In times when comedy is being redefined with rational and refreshing wit, the likes of Anees Bazmee have demoted themselves to the old school of humour. This is another comedy on the theme of adultery, perhaps with commercial considerations of reviving the success of Bazmee's No Entry .
Akshay Kumar is ruthlessly repetitive and remains in his comfort zone. Knowing that Sonam Kapoor and Bobby Deol can't act for nuts, Bazmee tries to balance it off by giving Irrfan Khan and Rimmi Sen more mileage.
And though the two try their best to salvage the situation with their decent comic timings, the load is too much for them to handle. Sadly this Shaadi No.
1 -meets- Biwi No.1 narrative is adulterated with so many tacky references that you end up saying thank you but no thank you.
7.) Ra.
One Director: Anubhav Sinha Cast: Shah Rukh Khan, Kareena Kapoor , Arjun Rampal Shah Rukh Khan's superhero character takes too long to boot in this science fiction flick. G.
One arrives just five minutes before the interval point by when you have already restarted your system several times, which has been hanging into nothingness. And the film's title character Ra.
One, a skeletal villain, gets a face (Arjun Rampal) even later in the second half. Is it worth the wait? Only intermittently and inconsistently! While the sci-fi film is able to pull off some visual dazzlery, fast-paced storytelling and thrilling action sequences, it relies too much on SRK's stardom than the script.
The title character Ra.One is not half as menacing as it claims to be.
Not only is Arjun Rampal inducted pretty late in the plot, being an 'outcome' of virtual reality he is too shallow and ineffective as the main villain Also the film has a very crude sense of humour and surprisingly the dialogues are more vulgar than witty for a film largely targeted at the family audience. With the theory that anything sells in the name of Shah Rukh, you are served with butt-spanking, crotch-grabbing, cleavage-popping, nose-picking, condom innuendoes, gayish and garish gags.
While any other actor doing that would have been tagged as 'cheap', girls going gaga over SRK would still like to call it 'charming' over here. At best Ra.
One qualified for a 'one' time watch. 8.
) Dil Toh Bachcha Hai Ji Director: Madhur Bhandarkar Cast: Ajay Devgn, Emraan Hashmi, Omi Vaidya A love story seen through the male perspective, Dil Toh Bachcha Hai Ji with three stars in its cast failed to achieve (or even come close to) what Pyaar Ka Punchnama did with its complete new cast (arriving a few months later). That's because the latter had a brilliant story to say while the former didn't.
Surprisingly the makers should have sensed this considering both the films came from the same production house. Madhur Bhandarkar's first attempt at making a lighthearted 'feel-good' film got an adult censor certificate but it certainly turned out to be a certified childish attempt at comedy.
The film tried too hard to be funny but became bland and repetitive after a point. The pacing was too laidback, proceedings too predictable and the graph of the narrative never picked up.
Emraan Hashmi was in his comfort zone. Ajay Devgn seemed uncomfortable.
Shahazn Padamsee irritated with her constant childish demeanour. And the only (unintentionally) funny moment in the film is whenever actor Aditya Raj Kapoor attempts to speak any casual line.
It's good that Madhur Bhandarkar is sticking to his brand of expose cinema (making ' Heroine ' next), because this juvenile attempt has exposed his weakness in handling other genres. 9.
) Mere Brother Ki Dulhan Director: Abbas Ali Zafar Cast: Katrina Kaif , Imran Khan, Ali Zafar It's more than obvious with a self-explanatory title like Mere Brother Ki Dulhan that the story of the film would be about a guy falling for his brother's bride-to-be. Predictability seeps in this Yash Raj romantic comedy from the title itself.
When Imran Khan does a takeoff on the three ruling Khans of Bollywood in the opening credits, you somehow sense that the film has defined its domain. And it isn't long before you realize that the narrative is taking the route of Shah Rukh Khan's Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge .
By the time the boy comprehends his love for the girl, she is already engaged to someone else. Only this time it's the boy's brother - so it's more of an inhouse affair! With Imran Khan restricted in his range and the immensely talented Ali Zafar being reduced to a second fiddle and grossly underused, it's left up to Katrina to save the ship which she ably does as far as the average script allows her to.
Mere Brother ki Dulhan was relatively old and familiar entertainment. 10.
) Tell Me O Kkhuda Director: Hema Malini Cast: Esha Deol, Dharmendra , Vinod Khanna , Rishi Kapoor Life seems to have come full circle for Hema Malini . In an attempt to reintroduce daughter Esha Deol with Tell Me O Kkhuda , the yesteryear dreamgirl does a spinoff on Dil Aashna Hai (1992), a film with which she attempted to launch herself as a feature filmmaker.
And the outcome is the same - dud! A girl who learns she's an adopted child sets on an aimless, endless and pointless journey to find her biological parents. She has managed to preserve her 24-year old hospital birth tag (phew) that wins her paternal prescriptions from the municipal hospital.
And every time the hospital is refurbished, she gets new options for Daddy dear! Hema Malini's direction is slack, shallow and lacks the dramatic punches when the scene demands and, on the contrary, gets melodramatic when not required. There is no palpable tension when the protagonist confronts any of her prospective papas for the first time.
And by the time Esha Deol walks with 'four fathers' in the climax, you realize that this dull drama dates back to your 'forefathers'
