Toy Story 3 - Movie review
When the first Toy Story came out in 1995, there was an instant connect to the film that talked about friendship, companionship and overcoming obstacles while having fun along the way. Pixar resisted numerous temptations to follow up the original with a series of sequels, but it resisted and waited till there was a story worth telling.
In the third part, they don't just have a story but so much emotion to back it up. Andy (John Morris) has grown up, he isn't the kid having galactic wars with Buzz or riding the desert with Woody.
A day before leaving for college, he needs to make a decision about his favourite toys locked up in a box??-- does he trash them, put them in the attic or take them with him? The answer isn't simple, putting Woody, Buzz and rest of the gang in a precarious situation that takes them on the journey of a lifetime where they discover who their real friends are and how far will they go to prove they belong together. Right from the opening scene to the last, there is a reason for everything happening.
The biggest asset of the film is the script scoring over the animation. When the toys are locked up in the box wondering where their future lies, you can actually feel for them.
After landing up in a daycare centre, the film takes a completely different turn. The teen princess Barbie and the metrosexual prince Ken make a whacky debut giving moments that will stay with you for a long time.
Watching Ken show off his 'closet' to Barbie takes his character to a different level. Buzz and Jessie (Joan Cusack) have a special track that's totally unexpected.
Watch Buzz do the tango and put his best Spanish foot forward.?? Andy and Buzz go through a difficult phase when they separate for a while.
There's a great message in the film??-- of never giving up on your best pal even when the odds are against you. The climax hits an emotional high and don't be surprised if you reach for that tissue.
When Andy has that look at Woody and Buzz towards the end, you realise how much significance these toys hold for him. Of course, apart from Woody and Buzz, we have the regulars??-- Mr and Mrs Potato head, Rex the ferocious dinosaur and others.
I don't know how much of a difference 3-D made to the experience, but don't miss the short film Day & Night at the beginning. It's not all fun and games, there are pretty serious moments in the film.
Andy should have got more screen time with his favourite toys capturing his best memories of them. We hope this isn't the last we see of Andy and Buzz, cause Toy Story 3 just reminds us how much we love them and want more.

Azim looks up to Salman, SRK and Aamir Khan
To make his character in "Qasam Se Qasam Se" appear realistic, Azim frequented call centre offices to absorb the finer nuances of the people working there. "It was quite a relevation for me as an actor.
I witnessed not only people's mannerisms but also the activities they indulge in during the break hour. Looking into the mirror, some guys would be busy ruffling their hair and taking care of their looks, while some would busy binging.
And there would others catching up with family and friends over their cell phones. This has helped shaped my character in the film.
" Azim feels that all our veteran actors were keen observers and would translate that on screen. "Whether it were the legendary actors like Dilip Kumar or the late Raj Kapoor or Dev Anand , they were schools in themselves.
I am a great fan of Salman Khan , Shah Rukh Khan and Aamir Khan and look at them as a student who looks upon his guru. I am mastering the art of acting watching their films," he smiles

My absolute must haves are browns, bronze and red shades of make-up, as they give my skin tone a very nice shine and suit me very well. I always carry these colors in my bag because I never know when I might show up at an event and feel completely under-dressed.

While talking about the honeymoon plans, Riteish had told us, "We can't have a honeymoon this month. Our producer Kumar Taurani has strictly forbidden us to go anywhere till our film releases this month as he wants Genelia and me to promote the film in various cities.
David Dhawan's son Rohit gets married on February 10, so immediately after our wedding Genelia and I will have to rush to Goa for that again. After that, will be my brother Dheeraj's wedding during the end of the month to Honey Bhagnani .
I have to be there for all the pre-wedding arrangements so going for our honeymoon this month seems impossible now."
(less)I never thought I'd be a desirable woman: Sameera Reddy
"My name in the list means a lot to me. As as a young girl, I never thought even in my wildest dreams that I would become a desirable woman.
I yearned for a perfect body as I was ugly duckling in school. But now that I have entered films, I believe that beauty is hidden in the imperfections of people and it all depends on how you use them.
That's my definition of desirable and I am glad to have made it to the list," says Sameera. The actor is basking in the success of her last Tamil release opposite Madhavan and has Padma Shri Priyadarshan's Tezz to look forward to.
Sameera has now decided that she will do a mix of performance-oriented and glamorous characters on screen, something that Simran and Jyothika did in Kollywood. So is the report true that Sameera wants to become the next Simran and Jyothika? "You cannot become another person.
I had said that I look up to both Simran and Jyothika, who had a mixed bag of roles- performance-oriented and cute characters. Both had their own fan following .
They are my role models and I want to have a beautiful lineup of characters like them," says the actor
(less)Sherlyn Chopra likes being unconventional
Be it politics, cinema, sports, business or any other arena, women across the globe including India are in great form mentally, physically and consciously to undertake greater responsibilities and tougher challenges that are often encountered on paths less travelled." Sherlyn is also happy that she has gone from being just a pin-up girl to an entrepreneur.
Says she, "The rapid metamorphosis in my case would not have been possible had the mindsets of the majority of the people in the Hindi film industry continued to be goverened by prejudices. I look upto entrepreneurs who command respect and attention for daring to think out of the box and act accordingly.
They do not have a herd mentality. What they have is unadulterated creativity which is set on fire by courage.
" Naming films like " The Dirty Picture ", " Erin Brokovich ", " No One Killed Jessica "," The Black Swan " as cinema that has changed the way we think, Sherlyn says, "Unconventionality is no longer a taboo. It is being applauded and celebrated by both the classes and the masses.
The pulse of the youth is racing towards liberalisation. And I'm truly loving it.
" Asked why she decided to give us photographs that resembled those of the " Jism 2 " campaign, the actor quips, "I have pushed the envelope by choosing to cover my nakedness with nothing but pure consciousness."

Hold on… if you think this is the end then please wait, there’s more to come) She was also flaunting some red color false flowers and feathers on her made-up hair. Also a yellow color strap on her neck which resembled a dog collar.
If that wasn”t enough she also carried herself on shinning red heels and a matching red color bag. Thankfully Priyanka Chopra and Mugdha Godse too were present and were looking extremely stunning and beautiful.

(less)Flash mob greets Imran at New York University
"I had a blast at NYU. Everyone was so enthusiastic, they put on a very polished, confident show, and the surprise flash mob at the end was perfectly executed.
My best wishes to all the students involved," Imran said in a statement. The students had been practising for the performance for over two weeks, ahead of Imran's visit to New York as part of the promotional tour.
"As the president of NYU Dillagi, a Bollywood dance team, I knew we had to have simpler steps that the general public would be able to do and we sent videos out to the public. I thought that the flash mob came out even better than expected since people kept joining the mob throughout the sequence and it definitely surprised those that did not know of it ahead of time," Mohit Chhatpar, coordinator of the flash mob, said.
"It was really fun to be doing a flash mob and having Imran among us was all the more fun. He was very sporting and interacted with the students.
We are excited about this movie as well and are glad he could come and be among us to talk about his movie," he added. The Dharma Productions' film, also starring Kareena Kapoor, is set to hit theatres Feb 10.

(less)Mohit Suri to direct Aashiqui 2 with fresh faces
"It's been 20 years for that film. So, obviously now I will have to upgrade this story.
It will be the same realistic love story but with a modern theme," Suri told IANS. Aashiqui won critical accolades after its release at the time.
It also catapulted the careers of lead actors Rahul Roy and Anu Agarwal, who forayed into Bollywood with this film. Suri is also set to hunt for new faces for the sequel.
"I will cast fresh faces with a new boy and a new girl," said Mohit. While some are referring to Aashiqui 2 as a sequel, others are calling it a remake.
However, producer Mukesh Bhatt of Vishesh Films sets the record straight. "It is neither a sequel nor a remake.
It can be said as the musical series of Aashiqui ..
.a new generation is making this film," he said.

As a result, director Ken Ghosh was roped in to present the award along with her." The awards event was organised by a channel at the Yash Raj Studios.
Adds the source, "Mugdha's sudden change of mind shocked the organisers. However, she did not mind going up on the stage with anyone else.
" Though Madhur had provided her a break in Bollywood with Fashion and later she also did Jail with him, buzz is that all is not well between the duo. Though they greet each other cordially in public, there is a bit of resentment from Mugdha as she was left to make it on her own in Bollywood.

(less)Lanka: Movie Review
Jaswant Sisodia (Manoj Bajpayee) rules supreme in the town of Bijnor and one of his indulgences involve forcing a girl Anshu (Tia Bajpai) to be his mistress. Anshu's parents are as helpless and humiliated as the vulnerable victim, who ironically gets willfully raped every night by Jaswant.
Jaswant's close aid (Arjan Bajwa), who he as well considers his younger brother, comes to the town and supervises his illicit operations. His loyalty towards Jaswant remains integral until his empathy towards Anshu overpowers it.
That's when he decides to betray his mentor. Visibly Tia symbolizes Sita, Manoj Bajpayee represents Raavan, and Arjan Bajwa stands for Vibhishan in this selective depiction of Ramayana.
And through its dense drama, the film justifies Vibhishan's stand to stand against the morally wrong Raavan. Where debutante director Maqbool Khan's expertise comes is in giving Manoj Bajpayee's character a poised tone wherein, on one hand he is despicable for the heroine, on the other hand he is role model for the hero.
As an audience, you relate to both the extreme shades in his personality, which can also be immensely attributed to Bajpayee's persuasive hold on the character. The plotline isn't entirely inventive and one has seen thematically similar interpretations, notably in Rakesh Roshan's Koyla (1997) or more recently Kites (2010).
How it steers clear from other cinematic adaptations of Ramayana is from the fact that it intentionally avoids incorporating Ram as the ideal protagonist and substitutes it with Vibhishan who might not be perfect yet opposes evil. So the entire essence of the film lies in the camaraderie between Raavan-Vibhishan (Bajpayee-Bajwa) and their subsequent conflict.
Thereby the director keeps the romance track between Arjan Bajwa and Tia Bajpai to the minimal and thankfully the narrative never branches out into their individual love story. A better alternative would have been to restrict their bonding only till empathetic emotions (like in Emraan Hashmi's Awaarapan ) over the avoidable streak of romance.
The focus is more on the conflict between men than highlighting the trauma inflicted on the woman. Thereby the lust and obsession that fuels Jaswant's desire to dominate Anshu, both, physically and psychologically, remains peripheral to the plot and doesn't register effectively enough.
In fact their back-story is never fleshed out. Somewhere there is more amity between the male leads than animosity with Arjan Bajwa's duty-bound character being a mute spectator for the major runtime before he rebels in the very end.
And post his revolt, the film comes to a quick end with a solo climactic confrontation scene between the men. The climax, however, seems hurried and convenient in the bigger picture.
It's sad then that what could have been shown as a rare account of ethical unfaithfulness ends up being a generalized preachy epilogue on how men should treat woman with respect and how wronged woman should not lose hope and continue their fight against injustice and blah blah blah. It almost changes the tenor of the male-dominated drama to a woman-liberation film.
Shashank Dabral's writing is fairly interesting to the extent that it never strikes your engaged mind that Arjan Bajwa's character name is never mentioned in the film. However the political nexus in the narrative isn't seamlessly integrated with central plot and rather runs parallel to it.
Also the dialogues could have been more effective over the trite lines. The film is completely designed in and around Manoj Bajpayee's character and the actor justifies the immense scope he gets with an authoritative performance.
He has a menacing attitude, his eyes speak volumes, he laughs hysterically and thankfully never goes overboard (despite a strong tendency to ham). Arjan Bajwa is impressive as the man of few words and despite Bajpayee's towering persona; he still commands good screen presence.
Fortunately Tia Bajpai is given the least lines, scenes and footage in the film and one doesn't complain. Yateen Karyekar as the defenseless father is impressive.
The immensely talented Manish Chaudhari doesn't get much scope here. Yashpal Sharma is regular.
Director Maqbool Khan shows restraint and refinement in crafting his first film. This Lanka, though not full of gold, has some shining moments.
Finally there's a film about Raavan which belongs to its Raavan! Verdict: Good

(less)Shyam Benegal to revive Chamki Chameli?
With names like Kareena Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra in the past and most recently even Vidya Balan doing the rounds to play the lead roles, Benegal has not given up hope to make his dream project. The veteran filmmaker said, "Yes, I am keen to revive Chamki Chameli but till everything is in place, I do not want to make any announcement.
I am looking at the possibilities and only when the time is right can I say anything. It is too early for me to divulge any information now.
" Chamki Chameli is inspired by Georges Bizet's opera Carmen but has an Indian setting. The story revolves around Chamki, a gypsy girl who is responsible for the downfall of many men.
In the past, Benegal at that time had already spoken to A R Rahman to score the music and the maestro had agreed. When the project was to get going initially there was buzz that Urmila Matondkar would feature in it.
Later in 2006, Sanjay Gupta was to produce the film for Benegal. At that time there was buzz that Kareena was to be cast as Chamki.
What also added to the buzz was that her sister Karisma Kapoor had featured in Benegal's Zubeidaa . But later Gupta opted out.

(less)SRK loses his cool at RA.One team
One is just ten days away from release and the digital intermediation (finishing process of a feature film with a heavy dose of animation in it) is far from the finishing line. And that's what is worrying the King Khan in the middle of his promotional blitzkrieg.
According to a source, Khan on his recent visit to the office where the digital conversion of the film is taking place, lost his cool and was seen giving a piece of his mind to director Anubhav Sinha and his team. A source informed Mumbai Mirror, "The entire team of Ra.
One is under a lot of pressure to complete the film. There are some minor fixes like colour correction left to be done.
The film is set for a worldwide release on October 26, so they have to be really fast. Shah Rukh has been keeping a tab on all the post production activities and was very upset to know about this delay.
" "Shah Rukh went to the post production and was angry with the team for not meeting the deadline. Anubhav Sinha, who was already in the studio had to face SRK's anger.
Later, SRK also motivated them to finish work at the earliest," added the source. While distributors at various parts of the world are waiting for the digital prints of the film to reach them, back home, the censor board is waiting to see the final print too.
"The film has been given a provisional certificate by the censor board. The team had to see the film in green background (croma) as the postproduction was not over.
They still have to see the final copy as the certificate also needs a mention about the length of the film," informed the source. When contacted, Anubhav Sinha said, "Yes, there are a lot of things happening in the postproduction activities.
We all are working hard towards it. But everything is fine.

(less)Golden Globes get ball rolling toward Oscar night
Though still playing in narrow release, the film has found enthusiastic audiences and has been a critical darling since premiering at last May's Cannes Film Festival, positioning it as the first silent movie with serious awards prospects since the first years of the Oscars in the late 1920s. In an age of elaborate computer effects and digital 3-D projection, The Artist is such a throwback to early cinema that it comes off as something entirely fresh.
"It's very relaxing for people to actually go to this movie," said Dujardin, nominated for best actor in a musical or comedy for his role as a silent-era star whose career implodes when talkies take over. "It's a new visual and emotional experience for people.
..
. It's really strange and rare to not hear anything in the theater.
" Tied for second-place at the Globes with five nominations each are George Clooney's family tale The Descendants and the literary adaptation The Help, both competing for best drama. Also in the running for best drama: Martin Scorsese's family adventure Hugo ; Clooney's political thriller The Ides of March ; Brad Pitt's sports tale Moneyball ; and Steven Spielberg's World War I epic War Horse.
For best musical or comedy, The Artist is up against: Joseph Gordon-Levitt's cancer story 50/50 ; Kristen Wiig's wedding romp Bridesmaids ; Woody Allen's romantic fantasy Midnight in Paris ; and Michelle Williams' Marilyn Monroe tale My Week with Marilyn. Along with honors from trade groups such as the directors, actors and writers guilds, the Globes help sort out key contenders for the Oscars, whose nominations balloting closes Friday, with nominees announced Jan.
24. British comedian Ricky Gervais returns as host for the third-straight year, despite uneasy moments a year ago when he took sharp swipes at celebrities and Golden Globe organizers themselves.
It paid off with a boost in TV ratings for the show, though, so the Globes invited Gervais back. A win Sunday can firm up a film's prospects to triumph at the Oscars, though the Globes have had a bad track record predicting eventual best-picture winners in recent years.
Over the last seven years, only one Globe best-picture winner -- 2008's Slumdog Millionaire -- has gone on to claim the top honor at the Oscars. Before that stretch, the Globes had been on an eight-year streak in which only one of its two best-picture recipients went on to become the Oscar champ.
Last year, The Social Network won best-drama at the Globes and looked like the early Oscar favorite. But momentum later swung to eventual Oscar best-picture winner The King's Speech.
The Globes generally do a better job predicting who might take home the acting Oscars. A year ago, all four actors who won Oscars earned Globes first -- lead players Colin Firth for The King's Speech and Natalie Portman for Black Swan and The Fighter supporting stars Christian Bale and Melissa Leo.
Along with Clooney, Pitt and Williams, other established stars nominated for Globes include Meryl Streep in the Margaret Thatcher tale The Iron Lady, Leonardo DiCaprio in the J. Edgar Hoover saga J.
Edgar, Glenn Close in the Irish drama Albert Nobbs and Kate Winslet in the stage adaptation Carnage. The lineup also features many newcomers to the awards scene, among them Wiig for Bridesmaids, Gordon-Levitt for 50/50, Michael Fassbender for the sex-addict drama Shame, Rooney Mara for the thriller The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and Brendan Gleeson for the Irish crime tale The Guard.
The Help picked up three acting nominations: Viola Davis for dramatic actress and Octavia Spencer and Jessica Chastain for supporting actress. Adapted from Kathryn Stockett's best-seller about black maids speaking out about their white employers during the civil rights movement, the hit drama has been a career-maker for many of its collaborators, including first-time director Tate Taylor, a childhood friend of Stockett, and producer Brunson Green.
"It's a testament to pulling yourself up by your bootstraps and not taking no for an answer," said Spencer, a longtime friend of Tate who had been toiling in small parts before The Help. ''Kathryn was an underdog, and Tate and I and Brunson.
..
. They'd only done independent films and shorts, and now they're in the big leagues.
" The Globes are presented by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, a group of about 85 entertainment reporters for overseas outlets. The ceremony, carried live on NBC, is a more laid-back affair than the Oscars, with Globe guests sharing dinner and drinks that can loosen up stars' tongues when it comes to presenting or accepting awards.
Behind the scenes, the HFPA and the Globes' longtime producers, dick clark productions, continue to fight in federal court over which entity has the authority to negotiate multi-million dollar broadcast rights to future shows. Although this year's telecast was never in serious jeopardy, the HFPA is anxious to try to negotiate a better deal with other networks.
While Hollywood will be in party mode right through the Feb. 26 Oscars, not every nominee will join the fun.
Midnight in Paris director Allen, a notorious no-show at awards ceremonies, said he does not believe in competition among films. "Who's to say Steven Spielberg's film is better than Martin Scorsese's or better than Francis Coppola's? These guys are all wonderful filmmakers, and everybody does his best," Allen said.
"Who's to say what's best? You can say that's your favorite, and that's fine. .
..
But to say it's better than another film, it's a very subjective judgment. Someone else may feel, 'No, I think this is the better film.
' It's unquantifiable." Tweet

(less)Review: Kannada film 9 to 12
After that he made "Joke Falls", a remake of a Hrishikesh Mukherjee directed Hindi film, and it did reasonably well. Now he has returned with a decent edge-of-the-seat thriller called 9 to 12 .
Unfortunately, the film has been released with no publicity as a result it has not been able to create a buzz, which is necessary because nowadays audiences focus on hyped movies. But Ashok Patil has done a fairly good job by weaving a story which is able to create curiosity among the audiences.
Not that 9 to 12 is flawless. The film about incidents that happen between 9 to 12 at night makes a disastrous beginning with a boring narrative.
But it gathers momentum, thanks to interesting incidents. Patil could have done a better while selecting artists for pivotal roles.
The film also suffers from poor production values. The music could have been a little better and the songs' placement may irritate you.
Many sequences in the first half drag, particularly when a bunch of eunuchs get into the hero's taxi. Despite the flaws, the film keeps the audience engaged in the second half.
Coming to the plus points of the film, Patil has been able to mix sentimental elements into a thriller. The mother-son and father-daughter sentiments gel well.
The story goes like this - Munna is a hot tempered driver who is attached to his mother and daughter. His neighbour Durgi loves him despite knowing that he is a widower.
Munna takes a loan to buy a car after he is sacked by his employer. At the same time his mother is admitted to a hospital and she needs to be operated upon and it will cost Rs.
300,000. Munna is devastated, but help comes in the form of an underworld chap who is ready give him money if he transports a bag to a nearby railway station.
As the film moves towards the climax, Munna is able to bust human trafficking attempts of underworld. Meanwhile, he also rescues his own daughter who has been kidnapped by the underworld.
Kishore Kumar has delivered a good performance. Actress Smitha, who has changed her name to Nivedita, doesn't suit the role.
Her limited presence in the film doesn't make any impact. Veteran actress B.
V. Radha has done well.
Niranjan Babu's camera work stands out. 9 to 12 is a good watch for people who love suspense thrillers.

(less)Saaransh writer’s tragic life on ree
Speaking to Mumbai Mirror, Mahadevan said, "I met Sujit a few weeks before his death, when I had just finished Staying Alive and was planning to move to something else. He showed me a diary in which he had noted many of his life-changing experiences.
One of them was about how his little niece inspired and motivated him to live and how he developed a deep and enduring friendship with her." This diary was also where the writer would note down points of his scripts.
After Sen passed away in 2005, the diary was locked away by the family till Sen's brother-in-law Pulakesh Bhowmick relocated it and handed it over to Mahadevan. Sen, who had a troubled relation with his colleagues - he was reportedly not paid for a lot of his work and had a fallout with the Bhatt camp - was also dogged by ill-health and as some in the industry say, was obsessed with death.
Several of his scripts tried to deal with the subject, giving us poignant and complex films such as Saaransh. Staying Alive has also been inspired by Sen's experience in the hospital.
The screen writer, who has given us classics such as Arth, had suffered a third heart attack and was admitted to Jaslok hospital. Next to him was a gangster, who had suffered his first major heart attack and was trying to bribe the doctors to immediately release him from the hospital.
Talking about Life's Good and the lead actor Jackie Shroff, Mahadevan says, "Jackie lost his younger brother very early in life. When I narrated the script to him, he just closed his eyes and went into a different zone.
Everything felt into place and I thought, he had probably identified with the character." Sen's brother-in-law, Bhowmik said, "Sujit loved Jackie not only as an actor but as a person too.
He has a heart of gold and Sujit da was very fond of him and treated him as his son." There is a sequence in the film, which Mahadevan says has been inspired by an incident in the late writer's life.
"In the film, Jackie is sitting with sleeping pills and he is not sure how much he should take to kill himself and he can't even ask a doctor for information. Suddenly, a little girl walks into the room, and he is stopped from taking the drastic step.
Sujit told me that he was very close to his niece and she was the one who gave him a new meaning to life. The film is my tribute to him.
" Confirming this, Bhowmik said, "All the kids in the family loved him. He was friendly with all of them.
His frustration stemmed mainly from the fact that many of his scripts were not getting filmed." Sujit Sen Before embarking on a career as a screenplay writer, Sujit Sen was a chartered accountant in Kolkata.
He came to Mumbai during the Naxalite movement in West Bengal and formed a creative group of screenwriters with Javed Siddique, Aakash Khurana and Robin Bhatt, who are famous writers today. Mahesh Bhatt's Arth (1982) and Saaransh (1984) were milestones in his life as a solo writer.
It was widely believed that Sen could not handle his fall-out with Mahesh Bhatt. He has also written for other superhits like Hum Hain Rahi Pyaar Ke (1993), Gumraah (1993) and Aatish (1994).
Also, he wrote the well-known 2001 television detective series C.A.
T.S.
He would always make light of the fact that he was a Bengali writing in English for Hindi films. Incidentally, Sen has written many Bengali novels
(less)Puneet Issar's 'lucky' role
Now, it appears that the actor-turned-director Puneet Issar too is getting in sync with the burgeoning trend. Puneet will be seen essaying an important role of Fateh Singh-a Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) cop who is a Sikh- in his upcoming directorial venture ""I Am Singh"".
Puneet, who has always felt proud playing a Sikh, though denies playing this role in his own film only to invoke luck at the Box office. A source says, ""Puneet had played a Sikh army officer, Rattan Singh in ""Border"".
So when the unit was deciding over offering Fateh Singh's role in ""I Am Singh"" to someone, producer Peshaura Singh Thind suggested Puneet to go for it."" Puneet was also seen in ""Bunty Aur Babli"" and ""Bachna Ae Haseeno"" as a turbaned Sikh.
Buzz also has it that Puneet's role has an astrological angle to it too, as an astrologer had suggested that his planetary position is currently favourable for him to take up the role. Since Puneet did not make an appearance in his production, ""Garv"", that bit has been playing on his mind.
""I didn't play a role in that because I could not offer anything concrete to myself. Basically, when I play the director, my mindset changes.
I can't do a role just for the heck of it,"" says Puneet. Fateh is inspired by a real life incident.
""While researching for my script, I came across the case of an American cop of Indian origin, who had to bear the brunt of his own department post 9/11 attacks and was asked to do sacrifice his turban. With lot of difficulty I found out some papers pertaining to the case.
Since I had carried out the research and had its case history on my fingertips, giving the role to someone would have taken a lot of time. And I was apprehensive whether that person would be able to deliver on the role's demands,"" he adds.
Says a source, ""American cops have a sturdy and tall structure. Since Puneet is blessed with such a physique, he turned out to be the perfect candidate.
"" Puneet, who is also looking at other scripts, is keen to walk into his projects in the future as well. ""Certainly, I feel good as an actor,"" he says
(less)Children's films: Bollywood wakes up from its slumber
Over the years, the genre has undergone a seachange, with many filmmakers entwining emotional and educational themes into commercial entertainers not just for children, but for adult viewers as well. In the past decade, filmmakers have tried to cater to children with animation projects like "My Friend Ganesha", "Bal Ganesh", "Hanuman", "Hanuman Returns" and "Ghatothkach".
But they have also experimented with children-related, issue-based themes like "Taare Zameen Par" and "Stanley Ka Dabba" to strike a chord with youngsters. On the occasion of Children's Day Monday, IANS lists a few children's films that either tugged at the viewers' heartstrings, or claimed box office success or even garnered critical acclaim.
" Mr.India " (1987) - At the core, this cult classic was a sci-fi superhero film, but the magic and thrill behind Anil Kapoor's invisibility act, and the emotional angle of over a dozen orphaned children, made this Shekhar Kapur directed movie much loved by children.
"Halo" (1996) - A heart-wrenching tale, "Halo" traces the journey of seven-year-old lonely girl Sasha, who believes a street dog, whom she adopts and names Halo , is a god-sent miracle. What happens when the dog gets lost, and Sasha traverses the streets of Mumbai in search of the pooch, forms the rest of the story of this Santosh Sivan-directed, National award-winning film.
" The Blue Umbrella " (2007) - Vishal Bharadwaj bagged the National Award for Best Children's Film for the film, based on Ruskin Bond's story. It narrated a simple yet touching tale of a girl who buys a Japanese blue-coloured umbrella and becomes the centre of attraction in her village.
" Taare Zameen Par " (2007)- Aamir Khan proved how emotional tales for children and about children can break box office records too. A poignant story of a dyslexic child, who overcomes his learning disability thanks to a supportive teacher, "Taare Zameen Par" won hearts, critical acclaim and box office success alike.
It netted Rs.770 million in its fourth week.
"Paathshaala " (2010) - The film opened to mixed reviews, but managed to drive home a comment on the Indian education system and its shortcomings. This Shahid Kapoor-starrer dealt with the issue of schools pushing students into TV reality shows and other media outlets to garner a popular public image, and how it impacts young minds.
" Stanley Ka Dabba" (2011) - Amole Gupte earned critical acclaim for bringing the sensitive, teacher-student relationship to the big screen with the story of a boy, his empty lunch box, his friends and a 'khadoos' Hindi teacher. Children found an instant connect to the film thanks to the camarederie between the young actors, and adults went down memory lane with it.
"Chillar Party " (2011) - A subtle story about a gang of innocent children who stand up against a politician and save a street dog's life. The film tugged at many hearts as children enjoyed it for its fun moments and the elders appreciated for its message on the class difference in Indian society.
"Zokkomon" ( 2011) - This Darsheel Safary-starrer aimed at being a superhero film with the youngest superhero in the world. A live action adventure about an ordinary boy who faces extraordinary challenges with his superpowers, the film opened to mixed feedback, but kids enjoyed it for its stunts

(less)Katrina Kaif does an action sequence
She has done marvellous action. This is the first time where she is doing action of such kind," Rajeev told IANS.
In the movie, there is a kid called Krishna and an animated Lord Krishna. "The sequence shows that she saves the kid Krishna from the goons," said Rajeev who had previously made " My friend Ganesha ".
Hrithik Roshan will also make a special appearance in it. Same as "My Friend Ganesha", it is also made with composite animation where an animation character will be seen interacting with a live characters.
"The film also shows that Lord Krishna is a big fan of Hrithik Roshan and he is eager to meet him. The whole climax is around Hrithik.
How Krishna comes and meets Hrithik, interacts with him etc, etc," said Rajeev. Releasing Diwali, the film has Juhi Chawla in the lead role
(less)B'wood bowled over by Sanju-Hrithik Agneepath
Film critic Rajeev Masand says, "I loved it. It is one of the most visually impactful promos I've seen in a long time.
The very first visual of Sanjay Dutt, who plays the baddie Kancha, dragging a man (who I am assuming is Hrithik Roshan's father) up the stairs leaves a mark. The montage of the huge Ganpati statue and several such images stay in your mind.
The film has an A-list star cast like Rishi Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra and Hrithik Roshan ." Masand is all praise for Dutt.
"His look is so menacing. I must hand it to the actor for going all out to get this look right.
He has bravely shaved his head, donned earrings, bulked up his physique; everything is so larger-than-life. I think he is the meanest character one has seen on screen in a long time.
" Rajeev continues, "Hrithik is equally exciting as Agneepath marks his return to the action genre. .
Hrithik's Vijay complements Sanjay's Kancha perfectly. If Sanjay wasn't such a mean villain, the hero may not have had enough to chew on.
But here, you can see Agneepath as being a fight between equals." Trade analyst Taran Adarsh says, "Agneepath could well be Hrithik's Dabangg.
The actor did well for himself with ZNMD and Agneepath will see him consolidate his position. As for Sanjay, it will be the turning point of his career.
Kancha is so ferocious, so venomous and Vijay is so angry, so livid that the clash between the two takes on gargantuan proportions. I know a lot of purists felt that Karan Johar and Karan Malhotra shouldn't have touched a cult classic like Agneepath.
However, after seeing the promo, I think this version will be a revelation." Vajir Singh, the editor of a film trade journal, feels that the Agneepath promo is a fine example of what commercial mainstream cinema is.
Says he, "KJo and Karan Malhotra know mainstream cinema really well. And their promo shows just those aspects.
This has been beautifully conveyed in the teaser. The good versus evil formula works very well here and reprising the characters of Vijay and Kancha works beautifully.
"

(less)John to lose weight for Dostana 2
Karan Johar however has now confirmed that 'Dostana 2' will go on floors next year in 2012. Katrina Kaif will reportedly play the female lead, replacing Priyanka Chopra.
After the mega success of Dostana, the news of its sequel has already created a buzz in the media. Lead actors, John Abraham and Abhishek Bachchan are ready to rock the big screen again.
This time, the setting of the sequel has been relocated from Miami to London. 'Tarun Mansukhani' is all set to start the shoot as the script has been finalized and Karan himself is extremely excited about it.

(less)Chris Nolan wants Dark Knight rises finale to be kept secret
Actor Gary Oldman, who plays Police Commissioner James Gordon in the film, said, "Christopher doesn't want anyone to ruin it and I completely understand that. The newer people on the film go to his office to read the script.
They sent mine out, but it had to be hand delivered directly to me and nobody else. And the final few pages were missing.
I went along and talked to Christopher and in person about the ending. Then I locked it away in my head," Oldman said.
The actor is happy with his role in the film and is pleased his career has moved on from the frenetic characters of his younger days. "I was younger then, that's all.
In 'The Dark Knight Rises' I'm the 50-year-old police commissioner while wonderful, young Heath Ledger is bouncing off the walls as The Joker. Now, had that part come along 15 years ago, people might have said, That's a Gary Oldman role," Oldman added.

(less)Dannii Minogue wants more kids
"There's the possibility of a bigger brood. The main thing has been getting my health back on track.
But I do look at other little babies and think, 'Aww it'd be nice to experience that again.' So yeah," she said.
Minogue, 40, loves being a mother but says she seeks guidance from husband and her brother when she is unsure about parental matters. "Kris knows it all and doesn't have fears about anything.
I'd never been around kids before, so he's teaching me along the way. I ask my brother for advice.
He and his wife have two kids and are always bringing toys around for each stage Ethan's going through. As a parent, sometimes it's so confusing.
I go to a toy shop and don't know what he'd like or what he needs," she added. Tweet

(less)Shah Rukh Khan turns toy boy
Shah Rukh Khan turns toy boy and in literal sense. For any and every Shah Rukh fan who wanted to have a piece of him, your dreams have just come true.
When it comes to a Shah Rukh Khan film, the marketing has to be the best in the business. So is the case with his upcoming release Don 2 which has become the talk of the town.
And the makers have gone ahead to release a toy version of the Don as a merchandise of the film. While movie-merchandise is a popular idea overseas, SRK seems to be the first Bollywood hero to be turned into a toy.
The toy is a miniature of Shah Rukh Khan as a bobble-head in his Don avatar. The styling, hairdo and attitude complements the film and is the perfect way to take your Shah Rukh Khan home.
After all Don ko pakadna itna mushkil bhi nahi hain

Journalists from the Bengal media who were in attendance at the press conference pointed out that she had left out Tapan Sinha and other greats from her list of favourites. "I was asked for only one name.
I am getting attacked for giving one name!" said Pinto in mock irritation. Commenting on Mrinal Sen, she said: "I think he was one of the most amazing film makers.
" Bengal was a land which gave India a lot of technical geniuses when it came to film making, she added. Pinto, who became a household name with her portrayal of Latika in Danny Boyle's " Slumdog Millionnaire ", also did not rule out acting in Bengali films.
"Let's wait and watch," she said
(less)I am a bad dancer: Robin Williams
"I can do swing dancing a bit, and Susan's so beautiful she leads. I can do fake Latino dancing, like a tango.
But I can do about three moves. I have a disco phobia.
The idea of breaking into dance moves is bad, it makes me go hunchback," he said. Williams also says that if he ever starred in a reality TV dancing competition, there would be a warning message on the screen urging people to send money in to buy him some lessons.
"I'm a bad dancer, like a damaged white boy. It's scary because if I dance it's almost like a telethon where you need to have the number at the bottom for people to ring and it says, 'Please help, send your dollars to help this young man learn to dance'," he added.

(less)RA.One gobbles up screen time
One. And lady luck, too, seems to be on his side.
While Khan has roped in the two icons of the film industry - Rajinikanth and Amitabh Bachchan, for his opus, multiplex owners have ensured that audiences get little chance of watching anything else this Diwali by giving the film 95 percent of the shows. Earlier, Aamir Khan's 3 Idiots got a 65 percent share of screenings when it released alongside James Cameron's Avatar.
Salman Khan's Dabangg got a 70 percent while Bodyguard got 80 percent SRK, with a 95 percent share for RA.One has beaten the others hands down.
Apparently, it wasn't SRK who decided the share. In a meeting last afternoon, multiplex owners, out of the three releases this Diwali, decided to screen 95 percent shows of RA.
One. The other two releases this Diwali - Esha Deol's comeback vehicle Tell Me O Kkhuda and Himesh Reshammiya's Damadamm! have managed to acquire one or two shows in most multiplexes.
In fact, Damadamm! might not be seen at all in a few theatres. Confirming the story, Anand Vishal, Head of Operations, Fun Cinemas told Mumbai Mirror, "Damadamm! will not have an all India distribution strategy.
It will be a selective release. As for Tell Me O Kkhuda, we might have three shows in some of our theatres and one show in others depending on the size of the theatre in question.
" A source from Cinemax India also confirmed that RA.One is getting 95 per cent shows in their chain.
"Picture ki publicity bahut hui hai. There is a lot of buzz about it.
It's purely a business decision," said the source. Talking about the decision taken by multiplex owners, trade analyst Amod Mehra said, "I am not surprised.
Whenever expectations are high, exhibitions are also high. What one needs to understand is that this is not a fight between SRK, Aamir and Sallu.
The fight is between SRK and Himesh Reshammiya. Himesh's last three films have been disasters.
On the other hand, Tell Me O Kkhuda comprises mostly of senior actors. So why is it unfair to let RA.
One have most shows?"
(less)Ranbir says no to Rohit Dhawan
Looks like Ranbir Kapoor is being extra cautious not to walk in their footsteps by declining a signing amount of R 1 crore for his director dost Rohit Dhawan's next film. Our well-placed source reveals that Rohit approached Ranbir for his next movie, about a week after the release of his directorial debut, Desi Boyz .
"Rohit discussed another movie with the same producers who produced the Akshay Kumar-John Abraham comedy. In fact, he even told them that he'd get Ranbir on board for their next venture.
They only had to keep Rs 1 crore ready to pay him as the signing amount," says our informer. The source further tells us that the two have been thick friends for a long time.
"Ranbir is often spotted hanging around with Rohit at David Dhawan's residence," explains our source, adding that considering this friendship, the director felt he'd get his buddy to confirm for his next movie. Instead, Dhawan Junior was in for an unpleasant shock when his actor buddy apparently declined.
"Ranbir cited unavailability of dates for the next year and a half, saying he was already committed," said our source. However, Kapoor's reasons are strictly professional.
As our informer elaborates, "After the acclaim Ranbir earned for Rockstar and the buzz Barfi is generating, he's not looking to do run-of-the-mill roles and films. Even Ayaan Mukherji's Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani for producer Karan Johar is a different kind of romantic script.
Since he didn't want to upset his friend, he told Rohit that he's preoccupied with prior commitments." When contacted, Rohit denied the story saying, "I haven't even opened my laptop after Desi Boyz , so I've no script to offer to Ranbir yet.
I respect him as a professional so I can't ask him to do a film without giving him any narration or story idea. Currently, I'm preoccupied with my wedding, due on February 3 and will begin scripting my next only in March.

(less)I want to go on my honeymoon: Kalki
. You have just got back from New York after the premiere of your film " That Girl in Yellow Boots" and now you're in Hyderabad.
That's a pretty hectic schedule. Ah! I feel so disoriented right now.
I'm running around for my movie, plus I have been committed to my play for a long time. Of late, my itinerary reads - Chennai, Pune, Mumbai, New York, Hyderabad - all within a short span of time.
Is time management an issue for a newly-married girl like you? Well, it's tough you know. Apart from my plays, I also have movie promotions.
For example, I couldn't join the cast of "Zindagi Na Milegi Doobara" for a few days, because I was busy with my prior commitments to my plays. Somewhere, I have managed to balance it out.
But I also believe that if you want to do something, you will always find time for that. Plus, there have been complete moments of 'nothingness' in my life where I had zilch to do.
And then, there are days like this when everything seems to happen at the same time. Is theatre still a priority? I have to be as professional as I can about theatre as I am with films.
Yes, I agree I haven't been able to give much time to the stage, but once I'm committed to it, I don't back out. For me theatre is very important.
It brings you back to your roots as an actor. Every time I finish a film and get back to stage, I feel so small.
It helps me become more open and bigger as an actor. It's kind of a training ground for me.
I'm taking films very slowly. I'm not trying to be an overnight success or anything.
Hence, I don't sign so many films. Theatre helps me fill the void between films.
If I didn't have it, I would have signed some not-so-good films, because I would have been bored sitting at home doing nothing. So, have you had those moments where you think you should be doing more films? Not really, because I've always been busy enough.
After "Dev D" there was a long gap, almost a year-and-a-half, where I didn't get any work. If I hadn't done the play "Skeleton Woman", which took up a whole year, I would have probably done any film that came my way.
Fortunately for me, I didn't feel that pressure. From no movies for one-and-ahalf year to three releases in 2011,is it too fast paced for you? (Laughs) Yes, it is, to be honest.
All these movies are releasing in one year. Probably, I'll have two years without a single release ! But I've been working on these films for the past year and a half and it's strange that all of them release one after the other - "Shaitan" , "Zindagi Na Milegi Dobaara" , "That Girl in Yellow Boots" and then "My Friend Pinto" .
I wish they would spread out a little bit because I'm not well-equipped to handle all this media attention. You've had two back-to-back hits with "Shaitan" and "Zindagi.
..
" The success of both came as a surprise to me. I knew "Zindagi.
..
" would do well because it's a lighthearted film. But I didn't know it would turn out to be such a hit.
I feared that it was a bit too upper middle class because it was set abroad. But the story is extremely Indian and the boys are so typical.
That's what worked. "Shaitan" on the other hand, was a complete surprise for me.
It's quite a dark subject. It's stylishly done and has a catchy soundtrack which makes it relevant and commercial too.
At the end of it, it's an entertaining and thrilling film - not those slow placed, boring, arty types. Your husband Anurag said that doing intense films with you takes a toll on your relationship .
Well, it's not like it saps me out or anything. But I wouldn't want to get repetitive with Anurag.
We've done two intense films together - "Dev D" and "That Girl in Yellow Boots" . So the next time I work with him, I want to do something different.

(less)Working with Kareena is such a joy:Imran Khan
. I don't believe in measuring the success of a year based on my professional life.
For me, a year is fantastic only if I've achieved my goals, personally and professionally. The year 2011 will be a high point for me because it was the year I married Avantika.
My journey with her has been great. I couldn't have asked for more.
Yes, on the professional front too, both my films "Delhi Belly" and "Mere Brother Ki Dulhan" did well at the box office..
. So, yes, the year has been good.
So you expect the good run to continue this year as well? Well, in our business you never know what to expect. Everything is so unpredictable that no matter who you are - big star or small -you have to leave everything to fate.
As far as I'm concerned, I believe in giving my best. After that I just sit back and let the audience decide the fate of the film.
But yes, as an actor I do try to do something different each time. "Delhi Belly" was different from the usual Imran Khan fare.
But then after that you did "MBKD" and now, "Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu". Critics say it's a return to your comfort zone.
I don't think so. Look, I believe in striking a balance as an actor.
With "Delhi Belly" I went risque and then to balance that out I did "MBKD", which was a complete masala flick. Similarly, now I'm doing "EMAEK", which is a typical commercial fare that the usual movie-goer likes.
After that I'll be starting work on Vishal Bharadwaj's "Matru Ki Bijli Ka Mandola", which again is not commercial. Yes, post "DB" people expected me to do movies like that, but no one knows that the film sat in the cans for three years with no one willing to buy it.
I don't believe in restricting myself at all. And honestly it's tough to know what the audience will like.
So how do you decide on your films? Like I said, you cannot second guess the audience. You make a film and by the time it reaches the theatres, it's almost a year and by then, the tastes of the audience has changed.
So, I chose my films depending on what I would like to see. I ask myself if this is the film I would watch and only then do I sign on the dotted line.
Apart from that, the script, director and producer are very important to me. The script has to be appealing and entertaining.
The director - even if he is a first-time filmmaker - needs to know how to translate the story on celluloid. And finally a good producer is important to market your film well to the audience.
See, it's tough to make a movie relevant with times. I think it's a movie that makes time relevant.
Look at "DDLJ" or "Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak" - people watch them even today. Coming to "EMAET", many are drawing similarities to the Hollywood flick "What Happens in Vegas".
The only similarity between our film and "What Happens In Vegas" is that the characters get married in Vegas after a drunken night in town. But this premise has been used in other films as well - "Hangover", "Two to Tango" heck, even in an episode on "Friends", Ross and Rachael get married after a drunken night.
But that's where the similarity ends. "EMAET" is a coming of age film.
My character is rather sad, because he has never done anything fun in life. He has only done what his parents tell him.
And this changes after he meets Kareena's character. So, rest assured, there are absolutely no similarities between our film and the Ashton Kutcher-Cameron Diaz flick.
The film is also been talked about for your pairing with Kareena. Ah! Working with Kareena is such a joy.
I've been friends with director Shakun Batra since my "Jaane Tu..
." days and he wrote the script keeping Kareena and me in mind.
When I read the script, I knew exactly why the movie needed an actor like Kareena. Her character has shaped up so well and to tell you the truth, no one could have played that role other than her.
Do you mind playing second fiddle to an actress in a film? I always believe in one thing - there are no small parts, only small actors. I would love to do a role in a heroine-centric film.
Look at what Vidya did in "The Dirty Picture". She carried the entire film on her shoulders and it's one of the top grossers of 2011.
You know, there is no dearth of good leading ladies in our industry. It's only the scripts that fail them.
Once you have a strong script for them in place, it works wonders. Hats off to directors like Milan Luthria who came up with "TDP".
Priyanka propelled "Fashion" to number one slot, Vidya did the same with "TDP", and now Kareena will steal the show with "Heroine" later this year. Any wish-list for 2012? I don't have any expectations as such.
I don't believe in them. I only hope that my endeavors bear fruit this year too.
As a person, I'm very optimistic in nature. I take life head-on and see the best in it.
Hopefully, the outcome of this year too will be great
(less)Rahman wins award for 127 Hours
Rahman has added another prestigious trophy to his shelf -- the public choice award for If I Rise from 127 Hours at the World Soundtrack Awards 2011 at Ghent, Belgium. "Thanks to my fans and the World Soundtrack Academy for the Public Choice award for the score of 127 Hours ," Rahman posted on his Facebook page.
The World Soundtrack Academy Saturday announced the 2011 winners at the closing of the 38th Ghent International Film Festival. The two-time Oscar winner was competing in the best original song written directly for the same track category, but lost out to Randy Newman, who took home the trophy for "We belong together" from Toy Story 3 .
127 Hours , directed by Danny Boyle, was based on mountaineer Aron Ralston real life story how he chopped his hand to save himself after a boulder crashes on his arm and traps him in an isolated canyon in Utah. Tweet
(less)Rockstar: Movie Review
If we go by this theory, most audiences of this film will walk out of the hall as rockstars, since the movie will largely leave them heartbroken. But for heartbreak, it is imperative to fall in love first and that's exactly what director Imtiaz Ali does.
He starts off the film on a promising note and just when you fall in love with the amazing first half, the narrative nosedives with a stagnant second half. So you have the naive Janardhan Jakhar (Ranbir Kapoor) who aspires to be a rockstar like Jim Morrison .
His yearning for heartbreak gets him close to Heer (Nargis Fakhri), as they bond over soft-porn cinema and country liquor. Soon after, the girl is married off to some NRI, the boy is thrown out of his house, he seeks solace in a dargah and next you know he's a singing sensation rechristened as Jordan.
A foreign tour reunites him with Heer and their passive passion rekindles until Jordan is obsessed with her. What follows is another tribute to Devdas or rather Dev.
D with the neurotic, lovelorn protagonist unable to get over his mixed emotions and confused definition of love. But that's not all as the plot meanders to culminate into an undesired arena of Erich Segal's Love Story .
Imtiaz Ali is known for his old-wine-in-new-bottle brand of cinema. Rockstar is very much engaging as far as it is in that familiar territory, where the director adds a refreshing touch to the regular romance drama.
The casual chemistry that he induces between the lead pair through their wacky and eventful escapades has its moments of charm. The passion-play between them when they reunite after years is spontaneous, smoldering and yet tastefully achieved.
Their reunion is also faintly reminiscent of the Jab We Met reunion, where the character-conduct is reversed with the burbling boy now trying to make the gloomy girl's life more exciting. And like Love Aaj Kal , Imtiaz Ali kick-starts the film with a montage song highlighting select significant sequences from the entire film.
But beyond that when the director ventures into uncharted zone, the narrative loses track. While one can still overlook the Dev.
D influenced intoxicating attitude of the proceedings (which you can somehow attribute to the convoluted rockstar protagonist), the subsequent terminal illness conflict takes the film towards an unwelcome and undefined end. After an interesting graph to the narrative in the first half, the story almost turns stationary in the second half.
The screenplay seems stretched and gets monotonous with repetitive media-bashing scenes and flashback shots of what has been already served to you. Another problem with the plot is that it is neither a standalone story about the rise-of-an-underdog who becomes the biggest rockstar nor is it merely a love story with a rockstar backdrop.
The director somewhere attempts to correlate the rockstar's rise with his romance but isn't able to achieve that impeccably. In fact the original one-liner plot with which the movie starts (a painful heartbreak gets out the real artist inside you) goes for a complete toss by the end.
One can never clearly perceive when Jordan's heart is broken in the assorted scheme of events and that's where the film loses objectivity. The storytelling pattern of the film is needlessly intricate for a simple romance-drama genre.
While it is very much linear, the frequent use of multiple montages can have you confused. Initially the montages aid brisk storytelling but subsequently there are so much of them that it gets puzzling.
Editing the film would surely have been a difficult task. Anil Mehta's cinematography is brilliant as he captures the beauty of Kashmir, Italy and Delhi with panache.
AR Rahman's wide range of music has numbers which are instantly infectious ( Sadda Haq ) and others that take time to grow on you. If Rockstar keeps you engaged even after you have given up on the story by the end, it is only because of Ranbir Kapoor.
From his innocence in the opening reels to his arrogance in the climax, Ranbir breathes life into Jordan and keeps you riveted. Whether he adlibs his songs, gives a dance-tribute to Shammi Kapoor or dictates the concert crowd, Ranbir gives cent percent to his character.
How much ever you try to ignore, but Nargis Fakhri fervently reminds of Katrina Kaif through her looks, acting, lip movements (and seemingly also has the same voice dubbing artist). Nevertheless she is likeable and shares good chemistry with Ranbir.
Kumud Mishra as Jordan's advisor-turned-manager is impressive. Aditi Rao Hydari is confident but marred by a short-lived character.
Piyush Mishra makes for an animated-yet-interesting negative lead. And it's pleasing to see Shammi Kapoor is his last decent cameo.
Rockstar rocks you but only partially thanks to the star called Ranbir Kapoor. Verdict: Above Average
(less)Shah Rukh Khan charms Lucknow
The Shah Rukh fever was evident at the airport as fans gathered there in large numbers to catch the first glimpse of King Khan. A fan also lay down in front of SRK's car and refused to budge till the star signed an autograph for him.
The charmer that he is, SRK, gladly obliged and only then did his cavalcade move ahead. The same frenzy of fans was witnessed at the mall too where people stepped on toes, nudged and pushed their through the jam packed atrium to get as close to the stage as possible.
Girls, women and men screamed a chorus of 'Shah Rukh' as he stepped on to the stage. ""Adaab Lucknow"" were his first words which was met with a resounding ""adaab"" by the audience.
Expressing his regret in reaching Lucknow late SRK thanked the people for giving him a warm welcome. SRK then introduced Priyanka and said.
""Inhe toh aap special welcome dijiye. Yeh toh aapke Lucknow ki hi hain.
She has studied in La Martiniere College here and loves the city,"" which was followed by a flying kiss and waving from Priyanka for the crowd. Saying the dialogues from his film ""Don-2"" Shah Rukh entertained the crowd and also serenaded Priyanka on stage.
The two danced on the song ""Zara Dil Ko Thaam Lo"" and the crowd went berserk in trying to capture each and every moment on their mobile phones and cameras. ""I have always wanted to come to Lucknow and I'm so glad to be here,"" said he.
""Yahan ki tehzeeb, mehmaan-nawaazi ke bare mein maine itna suna tha ki mujhe yahan aana hi pada,"" said he. The crowd too craned their necks and leaned on the railing to catch a glimpse of the stars.
So much so that when Farhan pointed out the same to SRK, he requested people to step away from the railing. ""Please don't fall off the railing.
I know you love me but I won't want anyone of you to get hurt,"" he urged. Shah Rukh, Priyanka, Farhan and Ritesh later addressed a press conference and spent the night at a local hotel where they sampled the Tunde Kababs, biryani, qorma and phirni which SRK ahd been wanting to have ever since he had come to Lucknow.
The four then left for Patna the next day at noon. THE ETERTNAL CHARMER: After charming the crowd outside SRK and team headed inside for the press con where he rendered the journos toungue tied with his classic rejoinders.
Dodging the repeated questions of an eager fan of who according to SRK, was the number one hero in Bollywood SRK replied, ""Darling I've heard your question, just wait a few moments. Aap baar-baar na poochhen mein aapko zaroor jawab doonga,"" adding, ""I'm not part of the number game.
So I don't know who is number one and number two. Isn't that for you people to decide?"" On being asked the reason for people to watch ""Don 2"" SRK in his non-chalant style said, ""Apne munh mein apni tareef kaise karun.
But jokes apart. This story takes forward the previous film and you all must watch it.
"" A few more questions followed and suddenly Shah Rukh said.""Weren't we supposed to be felicitated?"" leaving everyone flummoxed and a scramble ensued as people hurried to get the bouquets to give to the stars.
Munching on popcorn the four then answered questions patiently. Having avoided the question of supporting Anna Hazare till now, SRK answered the same very diplomatically saying it was for the government to decide the issue and he was too small a person to comment on it.
'As far as my contributing to the cause monetarily, I feel that is too small an issue and should not be discussed so frivolously and casually,"" he said turning to Priyanka to and asking ""Was I okay with my reply?"" to which she replied, ""You answered very well"" followed by nod of approval from Farhan too. A keen journo then commented on SRK's looks these days.
Sporting a ponytail and stubble SRK exuded a rugged charm. Not agreeing with the charming bit SRK said.
""This look has been sported for the film. And these days when I get up and look at myself in the mirror, I also get scared because my hair is all tousled and standing on my head and my kids complain that my stubble hurts them when I cuddle them.
"" Talking of children someone mentioned SRK's promise of quitting smoking. On this too he said, ""I'm trying to do that and I have also cut down on the number of cigarettes I smoke.
Mainly this is because of my kids who don't like my smoking. Insha Allah I soon will be able to give up the habit completely.
"" It was as of the other three were forgotten but Farhan too was asked if a sequel to his first film ""Rock On"" was in store for the audience. Looking relieved at being asked at least one question Farhan relied, ""I would love to make as sequel of ""Rock On"" but I still haven't thought of it.
I first want ""Don 2"" to be successful and then I have ""Bhaag Milkha Bhaag"" to concentrate on and only then will I think of my directorial projects."" Asked if the audience would see Shah Rukh and Priyanka in any other projects of his apart from the ""Don"" series Farhan said he loves the two and would definitely cast both or either if the role required them.
Meanwhile Shah Rukh and Priyanka nodded their heads in refusal and said they would 'only' like to be cast in the ""Don"" series. Priyanka meanwhile reminisced her stay in Lucknow as a kid and said, ""I have studied in the La Martiniere Girls' College here in Lucknow and I have very fond memories of the city.
I'm glad I came here during winters because Mumbai mein toh sardi ka mazaa aata hi nahi hai. I'm loving the weather here and now I'm going to snuggle into my razai and enjoy the kababs anb biryani,"" she said
(less)Bol: Movie Review
Born in a conservative Muslim family, Zainab is the eldest amongst half a dozen daughters of Hakim saab (Manzar Zehbai). The father's quest for a male successor in his family is thwarted when a son is born but with effeminate traits.
As the son Saifee (Amr Kashmiri) grows up amidst sisters, the father almost disregards his presence in the family. Director Shoaib Mansoor uses this family as a paradigm to address almost every concern correlated with the community.
The film primarily objects to the idea of reproducing human beings into this world (blinded by faith and self-centered intentions) without taking complete responsibility of their existence. Concurrently it also highlights the regressive attitude of a male-dominated society that offers no liberty to woman in choosing life-partner, refusing reproduction, gaining education or working independently.
And the concerns are very much contemporary with the film set in modern-day Lahore . At the same time, the film never stereotypes the state or its citizens but attempts to represent the intellectual illiteracy of a vast majority who haven't upgraded with times.
Almost all the issues are brought to light by the conformist characterization of the father figure. And with the outlook of the film focused only on domestic issues, the director refrains from giving any political overtones to Hakim's characterization and attributes his extremism to his orthodox upbringing and bigoted beliefs.
His fanatic philosophy makes him renounce his earnings from a plebeian pimp even in desperate times. You hate his chauvinistic attitude as much as you pity his penniless state.
While he is the only breadwinner of an extended female-dominated family, his ancestral physician profession is losing charm and clientele in an era when medical science has much evolved. So while on one hand you detest the fact that he doesn't allow his daughters to find employment, you also sympathize with him for having to stoop to the panderer's demands.
At several instances, the narrative smartly underscores the irony of life. While we have often witnessed woman getting into the flesh trade for survival, here the male species falls prey of the situation.
The fact that all his offspring were only girls, which had always been his biggest weakness, turns Hakim's strength when he gets money to impregnate a courtesan (Iman Ali) with a girl child. So while on one hand his second daughter gets secretly married to the boy-next-door (Atif Aslam), on the other hand the father surreptitiously ties the knot with the courtesan.
Like Khuda Kay Liye , Shoaib Mansoor's take on the subject is comprehensive and despite the long runtime, the narrative never gets tedious. The writing is riveting, and the dialogues in particular, are crisp, clear and caustic.
Despite the serious demeanour of the film, the director infuses sporadic moments of unusual humour, like in the scene when the siblings are fighting over an India-Pakistan match and the father believes that the sincerity of their prayers would be solely responsible for their country's victory or defeat. Even when the sissy brother is physically abused, the film never gets into titillation mode and remains refined.
There are portions in the narrative that the director never touches beyond a menial mention, like Zainab's failed marriage. But there is so much and more that the film explores that you never bother to learn about the omitted chunks.
A rock-concert number by Atif Aslam seems somewhat out of place in this film. Also the entire media circus and bureaucratic drama surrounding Zainab's death sentence could have been avoided.
Nevertheless, while the film could have easily started and ended as Zainab's story, the director intentionally takes it to legislative level to make a strong statement on national level. The film ends with an epilogue, which, despite being a little too optimistic, shows a ray of hope.
Bol is blessed with superlative performances by seasoned actors. Manzar Zehbai, undoubtedly, is the scene-stealer in his fanatic father characterization.
He remains in his character of a stern, angry and frustrated personality but never hams. Humaima Malick is absolutely brilliant in her author-backed rebellious character.
Amr Kashmiri never goes overboard even for a moment, a common tendency while playing an effeminate and stammering character. Atif Aslam doesn't get much scope but is decent in his part.
Mahirah Khan Askari is charming. Iman Ali looks alluring and is graceful in her short role.
Shafqat Cheema as the brothel proprietor convincingly alternates from being a friendly person to a menacing foe. Zaib Rehman as the vulnerable mother is compelling.
Shoaib Mansoor voices a strong and progressive viewpoint with Bol . Some good 'word of mouth' for his bold cinema please!
(less)Rachel Weisz to star opposite Colin Firth in The Railway Man
The real life story is based on former army officer Eric's book which details his experiences as a prisoner of war, and how he set out decades later to track down his tormentors and exact some revenge. Patti was responsible for helping him to confront his fears and she also wrote to the man Eric held responsible for his torture.
War Horse star Jeremy Irvine will play a younger version of Firth's character during his time in captivity. "Lomax suffered cruel and horrible treatment.
I've been studying what happened to him and it was grim," Irvine said. Jonathan Teplitzky is directing the film, with Frank Cottrell Bryce and Andy Paterson writing the script.
" The Railway Man is an amazing story and to have the chance to make it with Colin Firth as Eric is really the best gift any director could hope for," Teplitzky said. Tweet

." still hadn't released.
The same happened with " Delhi Belly " too. The movie sat in the cans for three years, with no one willing to buy it.
That both films finally released and created quite a buzz is a different story altogether," confesses the star. Now that the actor has consolidated his position in the industry, he still does not take his work or stardom for granted.
"Many have asked me if I chose my roles, for example like in "Delhi Belly", in a bid to shock the audience. Let me tell you, it's not true.
If you try to go out there and do something to shock the audience without even giving the script a second thought, trust me the audience will shock you by rejecting the film. I've never accept a role just because I think it's 'hatke'.
I have to believe in the script," quips Imran

On married actors being successful in Bollywood, Shahid says, "I agree that most of our superstars in the industry are married..

But again it (being successful) is not so much related to whether you are married or not. It takes certain amount of time to establish yourself as an actor.
Usually to reach there you need the support of somebody who loves you, takes care of you. "And so you end up getting married and settling down.
It (marriage) gives you a lot of confidence and certain sense of stability. So I think it is beautiful if your partner is with you on your journey in life.

(less)Mugdha says no to Madhur Bhandarkar
Says a source, "Mugdha and Madhur may have appeared to be cordial and even posed for snapshots on the red carpet. But when it was time for both of them to go up on the stage, Mugdha refused to share the space with him.

(less)Ek Main Aur... inspired by Woody Allen films: Karan Johar
"This is something new that Shakun is attempting here. He is a big fan of Woody Allen and brings with him a different grammar of filmmaking.
"As a result of that, you would see a lot more conversation happening here. You would notice that in many a Hollywood romcom, there are these walk-talk sequences where it is just you and the camera in motion.
You would see something similar in Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu ," Johar said. The 39-year-old, who is known for his romantic films Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, Kal Ho Naa Ho, My Name Is Khan and Wake Up Sid , also said that such films are far more difficult to do than conventional cinema.
"It is far tougher to find connectivity with an audience since there are no buffers like dramatic pauses, background score, props to enhance a scene. It is just the actors doing their talk and the trick is to hold a viewer's attention right through their conversation," he said.
Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu is also making headlines for its unusual pairing but Johar says that it was a conscious call to get Kareena and Imran together for the first time on the big screen. "We wanted people who are actually poles apart.
Shakun is very close to Imran in real life as well and as friends, they wanted the characters to shape up in a particular way." "For our production house though it is not very unusual.
Weren't Ranbir Kapoor and Konkona Sen sharma paired in Wake Up Sid ? Once in a while it is interesting to see unconventional pairing on screen," Johar added. Talking about Imran and Kareena's character in the film Johar said, "They could get their real life personality onto the film.
