Exclusive: The Item Girl Fixation
But while the phenomenon of item numbers may have become a part of the common lexicon in the new millennium, in no way does this imply that the concept is anything new. Indeed, far before some smart cookie coined the term ?item number?, dexterous dancers were making their mark and etching their names for posterity on the canvasses of Bollywood, with acting skills to boot.
In a look-back, let?s glances through some of the most famous item numbers and dancers of Bollywood of all time. Helen- Long before the concept of item dancers was established, the coquettish Helen had etched herself in the Indian cine-goer?s mind as the eternal item girl.
As beautiful as her namesake from Troy, Helen was graceful, but never lewd; sexy, but never vulgar. She lent the concept a level of artfulness and sensuality that all the other item dancers who followed her, can only aspire to reach, but never really can.
And while she has everything from Sholay?s ?Mehbooba Mehbooba? and Caravan?s ?Piya Tu Ab To Aaja? to her credit, nothing really matches up to her first big hit, ?Mera Naam Chin-Chin Choo? from Shakti Samanta?s 1958 classic, Howrah Bridge, sung to perfection by the legendary Geeta Dutt. Bindu- Who, but who, could have thought that a traditional, married Gujarati woman could look as sexy as Bindu did in the ?60s and ?70s? The campiest and vamp-iest of the lot, Bindu was also the boldest actress through those decades.
Although she also showed off her considerable acting skills in films such as Abhimaan and Chaitali, it was her bold image that made her an enduring sex symbol for the ages. Films such as Hawas and Do Raste showcased her as the essential vamp, but without a doubt, it was her portrayal of Mona Darling, in Zanjeer, dancing to ?Dil Jalon Ka Dil Jalake? that established Bindu as a legend amongst item girls

(less)Theatre is my passion: Pooja Pradhaan
Having modelled for almost three years and acted in a film ( Post Heist ) where she played a sultry undercover FBI agent, Pooja says she wants to continue doing theatre and films. The talented young actress' recent play Sunte Ho, dramatised by Gulzar to stories by Rabindranath Tagore and himself, is set to be staged in Mumbai tonight.
Pooja took time off from rehearsals to talk to BT. Excerpts from the conversation.
..
What's Sunte Ho and your character, Bindu, about? Directed by Salim Arif, Sunte Ho is set in the 1930s and depicts the plight of women of that era in Bengal. Bindu faces a lot of problems at a young age when she becomes an orphan.
After trying to find shelter with relatives, she turns to her married elder sister. Ironically, the only person she thought would protect her, is unable to do so because of social pressures.
The play is Bindu's struggle to preserve her dignity, and how she gets mentally and physically harassed, which eventually leads to her taking her own life. Preparing for the role must have been tough.
..
I tried to relate to the character. I got into Bindu's head - put myself in her shoes to see how she felt as a victim who no one was willing to help.
I stopped partying, listening to Western music and watching TV. I watched a lot of Satyajit Ray films to observe women of that era.
As a theatre actor, my job is to understand my character's pain and express it realistically. I believe I'm fortunate to be part of a play that has the stamp of Rabindranath Tagore and Gulzarsab - two legends of India.
Theatre or films? Theatre is my passion. I've given a lot of myself to it.
When I first started doing it, I knew this is what I'd been missing in my life. Being on stage and performing in front of an audience is very creatively satisfying but unfortunately doesn't pay that well.
Films are a bigger medium and have a wider audience, which is also gratifying

(less)Kavitha Krishnamurthy's hubby accused of rape
The artiste resides in Dollars Colony with his singer wife Kavitha Krishnamurthy and two children. Subramaniam had kept 5000 euros in a locked drawer at his residence after returning from an international trip.
Says Kavitha Krishnamurthy, "I had concerts in the US in June and my husband had accompanied me. We stopped over at Europe for a while.
" When the duo landed from Geneva on July 14, they declared 5000 Euros to the Customs department. But since the Euro exchange rate had dipped then, the family decided not to exchange the money immediately and locked it along with the declaration form in their bedroom.
"It was the first week of August that we decided to exchange the currency and found that the money was missing from the drawer, but the declaration form in which we had wrapped it, was still there," says Kavitha. But the family did not report the crime immediately.
Bindu, Subramaniam's daughter adds, "We had a similar problem about five years ago when our cook and driver stole from us and we recovered the money. Also, we had been noticing money and other items missing from the home and so decided to look around a bit.
" Money amounting to about Rs 50,000, a gold chain worth Rs 30,000 and an Ipod were found missing. They informed the police in mid August about their suspicions and the missing money.
"But we had a death in the family and could not formally file the complaint immediately," says Kavitha. It also took a while for the family to deduce the culpability of the maid because they had hired her through an agency.
"We spoke to Avon Agency in October 2009 to get us a maid. Bhagya came to us in January," says Kavitha.
But despite her working with them for about six months the family is still fuzzy about her details. Bindu adds, "We were told she was a widow with a young son whose mother lived at a nearby village.
But during her tenure with us, she often mentioned her husband and incidents with him. So I am not really sure about her background.
However we believed the agency." Bhagya also did not report to work for five days prior to the complaint being filed against her.
The family reported this to her agency. She turned up to work on Thursday and was picked up by the Sanjay Nagar police for questioning.
According to police sources, the cops found Rs 3500 (approx) in her bag and also Rs 4000 in her house plus new gold jewellery. "Her salary is Rs 4000.
You do the math," says Bindu. When we contacted the agency, the officials refused to comment on the matter.
But employees there say the only thing they do is fingerprint the maid and ensure that they do not have any criminal record. "We can ensure a clean past record.
What else can we do?" was their question. Meanwhile, the maid continued with her version that L Subramaniam had been harassing her for five months for sexual favours, which she didn't yield to.
"He had warned me that he would ruin my reputation and that is why he has filed a complaint against me," she said
