Instead, she suggests a few angles. “Wahaan se le lo, light theek aayegi.
Actually, that angle would be better,” she directs. She does not live with Disha, but says they have great bonding.
“I slap her whenever she’s being mischievous. And whenever she gives me a call, I tell her, ‘Haan haan, zaroor kuch chahiye hoga isiliye phone kiya hai aaj, hai na?’” About Disha’s singing career, she says, “I’m happy for her.
I was always aware of her talent. But she hasn’t got a break yet.
Let’s wait till she gets one. It’s too early to discuss her career right now,” says Deepti.
Why did Disha not sing in her mom’s movie? “Arre, my movie was done by then,” says Deepti. And whether her daughter will sing for her movies in the future, is something she prefers to leave to “time to decide”.
The film industry’s alumni (read Zeenat Aman, Helen and Deepti) are making comebacks. But did Deepti prefer filmmaking to acting? “Ever since I was a child, I wanted to be an actress.
And ever since I became an actress, I wanted to make a film,” says Deepti. She already had a few stories in mind when her producer met her.
“The minute I narrated one of them, the agreement was done,” she says. Do Paise Ki Dhoop.
..
, which won the best screenplay award at the New York Film Festival some time ago, revolves around a gay songwriter and a prostitute. “Rajat Kapur plays the songwriter, but finding the actress was not easy.
We did not want to cast a 20-something actress, but someone who is pretty and is ageing gracefully, so Manisha Koirala was the best bet,” she says. But that was just half the battle won.
“We spent a lot – a lot – of time getting her ‘to deglam’ for the role. It was tough, as she is naturally so pretty.
” Why a directorial debut with an unconventional script and actors? No particular reason, she says. But she believes that audiences are accepting such storylines, and is certain that “in the coming days, directors will increasingly take up such issues for their films”.
Deepti says she doesn’t understand why people ask for her perspective on the present Bollywood scene. “I wonder why I should comment on how the film industry is doing today.
I don’t think I’m the right person to make a critical analysis,” says Deepti. However, she admits that she can’t help make some comparisons.
“Uss zamaane mein kahaan itni technology hoti thi. I used to walk miles to make a single phone call.
Look how things have changed today,” she says. Pulling into reverse gear, she reminisces, “As a child, I would sit in a movie hall, stare at the screen and think, ‘Mujhe toh wahaan hona hai na.
’ And nobody thought my ambitions were real or sensible.” Even when she shared the idea with her family, she says, they laughed it off, thinking yeh toh pagal hai, isey abhi kuch nahin pata.
“It happens when you’re so small (she laughs as she recollects). Nevertheless, I was absolutely clear about my goals,” she says.
Deepti set out to make it big in showbiz very soon. “I began very early, but I had a long list of the people I wanted to work with, from day one,” she remembers.
But as a beginner, one has less choice, right? “Right. But not with me.
I have been selective from the very beginning,” retorts the actress, adding, “And I did get to work with some big names like Basu Chatterjee and Shyam Benegal, among others.” But as the flashback continues, she reveals, “In my career, I have made the right choices, but somehow, as an actress, I wish I had done more films.
Not just any movie, but at least a few more. Also, I could never work with Satyajit Ray.
I wish I could. He was one of the directors I really wanted to work with.

Deepti Naval finds nothing wrong with remakes
"Sequels are okay! I guess 'Chashme Buddoor' is going to be made again, so I can't say nahi hona chahiye (I can't say they shouldn't happen)," the 54-year-old actress told reporters here. In the past, Bollywood has seen remakes of films like "Umrao Jaan", " Don ", " Sholay " and "Devdas".
The "Chashme Buddoor" remake will reportedly have Ali Zafar in the role played by Farooq Sheikh . "If a film inspires a director, if there is something about the film which is kind of timeless and some director wants to approach it again and re-interpret it in his or her own way, I think they should have the freedom to do that," added Deepti.
She spoke on the sidelines of an event, where directors and producers gathered to plan celebrations for 100 years of Indian Cinema, in 2013. Known for her work in films like "Angoor" , "Kissi Se Na Kehna" and "Mirch Masala", Deepti feels Indian cinema has changed manifold over the years.
"I have followed cinema ever since I was a baby. And I have seen various phases of Hindi cinema in my lifetime.
Every decad, there has been a change. The taste has changed, phase has changed, stars have changed, filmmaking has changed.
..
So, there is a whole lot to look back at, there is a whole lot for us to celebrate," said the actress, who has spent 32 years in the industry. Deepti, who started her career in 1979 with "Junoon, was last seen in "Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara" and "Bhindi Bazaar".
She also directed her first film "Do Paise Ki Dhoop, Chaar Aane Ki Baarish" featuring Manisha Koirala , Rajit Kapur and her own nephewm, Sanaj naval. The film premiered at Cannes Film Festival in 2009 but is yet to release in India
