(less)Celebs' big hopes for Budget
Not only that, many airlines too announced a hike in fares, leaving everyone groaning in frustration. While experts have been suggesting that the 3Fs - food, fertiliser and fuel - must be Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee's priorities, we asked Mumbaiites what they expect from the budget on Friday.
Dia Mirza, Actress The budget impacts everyone. What we must remember is that our financial policy affects the way India runs and that will always have a trickle down effect.
As citizens, we must be aware and question allocations being made and ensure a follow up on the accountability for the funds assigned to various sectors. Else it will always remain a whole lot of money being committed and very little to show for it.
Sarah-Jane Dias, Actress I hope it's a budget about accumulation and growth. With the size and capability of our domestic economy, we can do much to impact the economic status of society.
I hope that it focuses on sectors that are crucial, like roads and construction, and that it benefits the common man in every way. Pankaj Advani, Cueist I hope the Finance Minister agrees to the Indian Olympic Association's (IOA) recommendation and allocates a larger amount of money to sport in India.
The IOA has not only asked for more fund allocation for the development of Indian Olympic teams, but also for money to be invested in rural and club level sports. Prasad Bidapa, Fashion expert I want income tax to be abolished.
If not, the government should raise the exemption limit to 50 lakh a year. The government will have enough and more money if it does two things: a) bring back all the black money stashed away abroad, and b) empty the coffers of corrupt politicians.
That apart, a cut in fuel prices would be welcome, which in turn will bring down the cost of other essentials. The government needs to find alternative sources of funding for development projects and not drain us with heavy taxes.
Siddharth Shangvi, Writer I expect the government to raise excise duty and increase the number of sectors under the service tax ambit in order to curtail fiscal deficit (hovering at nearly 6 per cent this year). Expect it populist.
But pray for reforms. Prahlad Kakar, Ad man All I want is for everyone's savings not to get eroded.
Right now, the scene is dismal. Most important is that inflation levels have to come down.
The other thing is that government spending is atrocious and totally out of control - there are so many fat cats in bureaucracy sitting there doing nothing, so we should sack half the government and privatise everything! Jitesh Kallat, Artist Frankly, charts and numbers are impossible for me to de-code. I can only hope the budget is pro-people and planned with the less privileged in mind.
As told to Ismat Tahseen
(less)Shahid Kapoor will find true love in 2014?
Even his much talked about relationship with Priyanka Chopra went sour. As his birthday comes close, we ask astro numerologist Bhavikk Sangghvi on what the future holds for the talented Shahid Kapoor? "Shahid was born on 25th February 1981 which makes him a Number 7 (Ketu) person in numerology.
He is a Piscean (ruler Jupiter - Number 3) and his destiny number adds up to Number 1 (Sun). Since he is ruled by Number 7, he is automatically ruled by Number 2 (Moon) as these two numbers always go hand in hand" explains Bhavikk.
"Being a Number 7, Shahid is very creative but also very moody. He can be soft spoken and family loving but at the same time very temperamental and aggressive.
He will acquire what he wants from life no matter what and will get it on his terms. Even money would keep flowing in and he shall have no major monetary problems as such ever in life.
He should learn to keep his secrets of life to himself as he easily gets targeted by negative forces around him which may hamper his progress personally as well as professionally", he explains further. "This year when Shahid will be primarily running in his 32nd year will also prove to be just plain average for him.
His work in his next release Kunal Kohli's 'Teri Meri Kahaani' (tentatively titled) with ex-girlfriend Priyanka Chopra will be much appreciated, but the film may not do well as expected", predicts Bhavikk. "Even on the personal front, things might not be that good for Shahid.
He will actually have to wait for some more time (read 2014) to find his 'true love' and only then he can think of settling down". "Wearing a Cat's Eye set in silver on his smallest finger on a Thursday night will help him deal with the tremendous amount of negative energy which he is surrounded with", signs off Bhavikk on a serious note
(less)Saif booked for assaulting South African trade honcho
A case under section 325 of the IPC has been registered against Saif. The actor may face seven years imprisonment if arrested and convicted for physical assault.
The incident took place last night at Wasabi restaurant, Taj Hotel when he, along with Kareena, Malaika Arora Khan, Amrita Arora Ladak and a few friends, were having dinner. Iqbal M Sharma, a temporary resident of Juhu, was sitting with his family at an adjoining table.
According to reports, Iqbal complained about the clamour that Saif and his friends made. This ticked off Saif and a scuffle broke between the two.

(less)Its a scary scenario: Pankaj Dheer
The serial has gone through a time leap, and while many old actors are no longer part of it, Pankaj continues to be in the show. Whats interesting about this versatile actor is that he speaks his mind.
He does not mince words while commenting on the overall TV industry, its functioning and how creativity has taken a backseat in this rat race. First of all, there is a famine of writers in our industry.
Secondly, there is no writer or visualiser, in cinema or television, who can write stories that go on for so long. Television is basically a writers medium, so these so-called writers stick to characters and weave around them yarns inspired from Hindi cinema.
It is a very simple trick of keeping the audiences hooked by making highly melodramatic half hour episodes, laced by ham performances and backed by garish costumes and sets. Not to forget the background music with its famous bangs! Sadly today, regressive stories have taken over.
They remind you of the saas-bahu hassles of 1950 and onward films, characters played by Lalita Pawar as the strict sadistic saas and the ever-suffering bahu played by our melodramatic lead heroines! Channels have an excuse saying this is what Indian audiences like. Anyway, talking about why I am still in Raja Ki Aayegi Baraat, well, I am very fortunate that the writer feels that my character should stay and so does the channel.
I could also go on to say that maybe the audiences like my face or something about me that they want to tolerate me more than the others. And yes, I am not being humble, because I cant see any other reason! The Buniyaad, Malgudi Days and Mahabharat days were the best when every scene in an episode was given utmost importance, he says.
That was a time when great writers, directors and makers were involved in television. Some superb shows were produced then.
Today our industry is plagued with have-beens and have-nots. This phenomena happened when the so-called B and C class of films stopped, at that time the TV industry was raided by mediocres who were ready to work for peanuts, the channels got attracted to them and then came the era of rubbish, which is still prevailing with creative people and knowledgeable artistes taking a back seat.
This scenario is sad and also scary. One really does not know how long this will go on.
With nincompoops as writers and marketing pimps as producers and with directors who have no formal training in cinema, television surely is rotting. No stories, no entertainment, no dream-selling, no feel good factor and no writers is the main reason why they take bizarre turns and leaps.
I wish that in our country, which boasts of a culture dating thousand years, we produce stories that can be classics. Thats Pankaj Dheer for you, vocal and straight-forward.
Hats off to him for being so frank in an industry where diplomacy rules!
(less)Akshay Kumar, the Early Riser
How do we know? Well the story goes like this? At the break of dawn, with the rising sun, arose our very own Akshay Kumar to attend the opening of his close friend Pankaj Dheer's acting academy. Pankaj (popularly known as 'Karna' from the hit series Mahabharat) has recently started his acting academy called 'Abhinnay' and wanted his good friend Akshay to mark the opening for his new venture.
Akshay, who has shared a wonderful working relationship with Pankaj in movies like 'Ike pe Ika' and 'Mr. Bond', was thrilled at the offer! The only hitch?Akshay was shooting on the same day since morning.
Akshay wanted to keep his promise which he made to his friend and attended the opening at 7 am! Well Mr. Kumar has surely taught us a valuable lesson.
A friend in need is surely a friend indeed!!
