Dressed in a white sari with her trademark red bindi and kohl, Shubha talks to CS about her musical influences: I never got a chance to learn from Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan Saab or his disciples, but there's not a single Hindustani classical singer who has escaped his influence. My parents loved his music, so I grew up listening to him on almost a daily basis.
The magnificence and delicacy of his voice is unparalleled. Even if you tried to imitate his voice by listening, you would learn so much in terms of voice control, expression and artistry.
Such was his genius. I love his renditions of kamod, todi and shuddha sarang.
When you study music, you realise that one lifetime isn't enough to learn even a single form of music. Unless you are supremely confident or complacement, you cannot say that you are a master of any form.
I still consider myself a student, and that gives me immense happiness, satisfaction and inspiration. Though people associate me with Hindustani classical, I like to listen to all kinds of music.
And I consider myself very lucky to be in a age where I have easy access to all music forms. I believe that the voice defines the power of music.
I have never put much value in the gharana system and so have learnt music from various gurus. Each one of them had something special in them.
Ustad Amir Khan Saab, Ustad Abdul Karim Khan and Kumar Gandharva have had tremendous influence on me. In the world of thumri, I adore Begum Akhtar.
I absolutely love Ella Fitzgerald, the late American jazz vocalist. Larry Armstrong is another favourite.
Basically, I love jazz. I enjoy listening to the pop divas like Whitney Houston, Celine Dion, Mariah Carey, Shakira, as well as Bollywood film music.
Yes, I like Shakira (laughs). WHAT: Speaks about her role models "Please don't ask me to sing while posing for pictures," says a hesitant Shubha Mudgal, as we request her to render a few lines of the full-bodied Ab Ke Sawaan while she was being shot.

While fans of Moitra's genre will be delighted with the album, others wouldn't be disappointed either as he creates a soundtrack that is different, encompasses melody and doesn't miss out on the Indian classical touch.
Swanand Kirkire provides the lyrics for the title track "Chunari mein daag", a brilliant piece of music. Vocals by Shubha Mudgal are a treat as her amazing voice does complete justice to the song
(less)Ritu dubbed for his leading ladies
He has served as costume designer, art director and an all-purpose all-in-one man-on-the-spot on his sets. He has even dubbed some emotional dialogues for some of his superstar leading ladies from Mumbai when they've not been able to get their dramatic pitch right.
But his latest role as a lyric writer for Deepa Mehta has taken everyone by surprise. The sensitive Toronto-based filmmaker has asked her prolific colleague from Kolkata to write a song, and that too in the Bihari Brij Bhasha, for her Amitabh Bachchan period epic Kamagata Maru to be filmed next year.
Exults Deepa, "I think Rituparno is a wonderful humanbeing and an astonishing filmmaker. But when I heard his songs in the Brij Bhasha sung by Shubha Mudgal for Raincoat which he had written I knew I had found my lyricist for Kamagata Maru.
The song will be filmed on a homesick nostalgia-driven Bihari traveling far away from home." Ritu has agreed to do it.
" Deepa is someone whom I really respect. And why just her? I"ve also written Bengali dialogues for Mira Nair The Namesake and for a number of Aprana Sen's films including Yugant and her documentary An Unordinary City on Kolkata.

"It is a new role for me. I am normally at the receiving end of awards.
It is a great pleasure for me at the age of 92 to give awards to the people who I have been admiring since long. It is my first venture as an award giver," the great musician said.
Other artists in the list are folk singer Teejan Bai, violin virtuoso L Subramaniam, tabla maestro Ustad Zakir Hussain, vocalist Shubha Mudgal, musician Ilaiyaraaja, vocalist Pandit Jasraj and flautist Hariprasad Chaurasia. Bhosle, who recently entered the Guinness World Records for maximum number of recordings, said she was surprised that Delhi people did not speak in Hindi and later thanked the audience for understanding her speech in Hindi.
"No one in Delhi speaks Hindi. I recently entered the Guinness World Record for singing most songs but this award is the biggest honour because it has come through Pandit Ravi Shankarji.
I met him after a long time and he reminds me of Tagore. God has forgotten to create people like him.
" Yesudas and L Subramanium thanked their fathers for giving them the gift of music. The former recited a Sanskrit shloka and said he was still the student of music.
Subramanium recalled his association with Ravi Shankar and George Harrison in the 70s. The violinist said he left medicine to study music much to the shock of his family but they supported his choice.
Teejan Bai, the Pandavni singer, said she did not understand about the honour but later realised that it was given to nice people. The 23rd edition of the Limca Book of Records by Coca-Cola India is dedicated to music and features over 10,000 awe-inspiring feats in its latest edition, of which 6000 are new records achieved by Indians.
