I've created an identity of my own: Soha Ali Khan
Some of the other actors in the film include Ankur Khanna, Victor Banerjee, Roopa Ganguly, Zeenat Aman, Shayan Munshi, Suchitra Pillai, Arundathi Nag, and Sid Makkar. Although the film is not your typical masala fare, Soha feels that there are enough people in India who want to watch such kind of movies.
"Some films are aspirational," she says, "But there is room for stories which don't have a beginning or end. It's like watching a few days in the lives of some people.
" The film, with its own take on relationships, has three stories interwoven with each other. While one takes place in Mumbai, the others are based in Kolkata and Chennai.
Talking about her role, Soha reveals that she's part of the story based in Mumbai. "It's a relationship between a writer and this girl, who're very different people.
The stories in the film are of ordinary people, but told in a nuanced manner," she adds. Although the film's up for release now, it's one of Soha's first films, as she shot it in 2007.
"It was Rajshree's first film and one of my first films as well. I remember meeting her six years back when she narrated the story to me.
The character had enough interesting moments for me to say yes to it," she says. The most important thing Soha says she's learnt in her career till now, is that the director is the captain of the ship.
"Even if it's a bad story, a great director can turn it into something brilliant. I've seen what a difference a good director can make to an actor's performance," says Soha, who has had a good end to 2011 with Soundtrack.
"The film didn't receive even one bad review and I'm really proud of it as I had a difficult role in it," she adds. With Mira Nair's Midnight's Children, a rom-com Chemistry and Sahib Biwi Aur Gangster Part 2 in her kitty, she's on a roll! "I believe I have grown by leaps and bounds in the last five years and created an identity of my own," says the actress
(less)No actor should trust director blindly: Dibakar Banerjee
"No actor should trust a director blindly. All good actors should trust only the script.
My film scripts are ready a year before I go and show it to the actors. In 'Shanghai', there are three actors -- Abhay Deol, Emraan Hashmi and the script," Dibakar told IANS.
All the way from "Khosla Ka Ghosla" to " Shanghai", Dibakar's movies have been loved by the audience. He usually picks up unconventional topics and his latest flick, "Shanghai", is no exception.
Dibakar says despite successful films in his kitty, he is worried about the response to "Shanghai" that also features Kalki Koechlin and Prosenjit Chatterjee. It is releasing June 8.
"After a film is made, how would a director won't have pressure? I am not a big filmmaker. I have risen slowly.
People have appreciated my work and that is why I am here," said Dibankar, adding that he doesn't want to misuse it

(less)'Shanghai' bridges dreams and reality: Dibakar Banerjee
Where there are lots of buildings, skyscrapers, hotels, pubs and material prosperity. The reality of our (Indian) cities is not so," Banerjee told IANS.
"We know what they are. There is traffic, pollution; and civic amenities are bad.
There is good and bad here in the film. There is this India which is stuffy, dirty and hot, and anti-Shanghai," he added.
The movie stars Abhay Deol, Emraan Hashmi , Prosenjit Chatterjee and Kalki Koechlin. Shanghai itself plays a metaphor for progressive change.
Elaborating further, the 40-plus filmmaker said: "It's the difference between dream and reality. It shows the reality behind the dream and shows the dream in the middle of reality.
It is a dream to make Indian cities like Shanghai." The film has been inspired by a mid-1960s book 'Z', by Greek writer and diplomat Vassilis Vassilikos, but adapted to Indian sensibilities.
It has been reported that Shanghai will draw the viewers' attention to corruption in the country. "It's a contemporary film.
It's about our times, our lives. It's about politics in our life and how it controls our life and we control our lives with it.
It's about the issue of development and economy. "It's a murder mystery, thriller, chase and hunt," said the director, who has earlier helmed movies like Khosla Ka Ghosla and Love, Sex Aur Dhoka .
The cast is a rather unique mix of actors - Bollywood's serial kisser Emraan Hashmi, dimpled boy Abhay Deol and Kalki, known for unconventional choice of films. Banerjee had special reasons for this mix-and-match.
"Abhay plays an IAS officer, Emraan plays a photographer and journalist from a small town and Kalki plays a half British-half Indian girl born to an Indian army general who has been court martialled. In a normal set-up, these characters will never meet," he said.
"The reason for the cast is that just as in a typical Bollywood film, you'll never have Abhay and Emraan acting in the same film, the same way you'll never have Emraan and Kalki sharing a romantic relationship. "I have wanted to take unlikely partners and force them to co-exist with each other and go through this adventure," he added
(less)I enjoy taking calculated risks: Dibakar Banerjee
"I am cautious when I approach a star. There has to be a right script, star and role to come together for my film.
I managed to have two talented stars with me for Shanghai . I enjoy taking calculated risks with every film.
If I don't do something new, I don't find the process of filmmaking interesting," Dibakar said. The stock of both the actors have gone up since they were signed for Shanghai which has kept the film in news despite delays in the release much to the delight of Dibakar.
"Perhaps no one ever imagined Emraan and Abhay to be in such avatar but now that it has happened, there is good excitement build up. For them to come together in the same film and that too in the kind of roles they are playing is nothing less than a casting coup.
" Emraan had a hit with Murder 2 and The Dirty Picture last year while Abhay enjoyed his biggest commercial success with Zindagi Naa Milegi Dobara . The director, who is known for casting actors rather than stars in his films, says he is not against the star system of Bollywood.
"Stars have that palpable pressure of stardom on their shoulder. Sometimes it is unfair on our part to ask them to throw off that weight so casually and expect them to do something differently for our sake.
" Shanghai is first adaptation for Dibakar, who is known for picking up stories from newspaper headlines and the life around in films like Khosla Ka Ghosla , Oye Lucky Lucky Oye and Love, Sex Aur Dhoka . It is is based on Greek author Vassilis Vassilikos' famous novel Z and has already been made into a successful French movie.
It was earlier scheduled to release in January but will now hit theatres in June. Shanghai stars Kali Koechelin as the female protagonist and also features Prosenjit Chatterjee and Farooq Sheikh in key roles.
With music by Vishal-Shekhar, the film releases all over on June 8. Tweet
(less)Emraan went incognito on 'Shanghai' sets
Whenever he comes, people call out his name. Surprisingly no one recognised him (during the shoot of 'Shanghai') because Emraan sported a small paunch and buck tooth too," Banerjee said in a statement.
"Shanghai" is a political thriller, which also features Abhay Deol and Kalki Koechlin. Of Emraan's character, Banerjee said: "Emraan plays a small town guy, a street smart character.
" "He is always on the lookout to make money and once in a while does sidey night shoots. If he sees a girl, he will sweet talk her into getting a photo shoot done.
Actually, he is a very lovable character with tremendous depth." The film will release June 8
(less)Kim Kardashian to sue a plastic surgeon
"Obviously I did not speak to Kim Kardashian. I do not have her number," Ramirez said.
Kardashian has put her lawyers on the case and they are said to be discussing their course of action. Although the Keeping Up With The Kardashians star has admitted to trying Botox in the past, she previously said she would think carefully before having plastic surgery.
"I don't worry about ageing. I might consider a 'lift' but women in Los Angles go too far.
I don't want to end up with big puffy lips and a scary stretched-back face," she said. Tweet
